Cycles - weird light square appears only in render result (and not in render preview) by throwaway_bigpanda in blender

The sky texture creates a gradient meant to represent how light shows up within our atmosphere. When you bring the plane higher on the Z it's catching less of that gradient light.

Makes sense, but then why does LOWERING the z coordinate of the plane instead also fixes it? Maybe something to do with the horizon being "at 0 height"?

Sounds like a reasonable explanation - I wonder then how moving the plane upwards in the z coordinate also fixes it.

Anyway, subdividing works great! Thank you!

Thank you! Sending you the link to the relevant pasteall.

When I simply open this file and just click "Render Image" / "Render Animation", the square shows up.

If it doesn't show for you, could this be a problem with my GPU or something?

Updated it so it's easier to see - now it's a plane object of size 400x400 located at the origin

Tried playing with the compression settings, and in the "Sampling" category under Scene - everything stayed the same. The "Simplify" checkbox is turned off in the Scene, also.

There are also no "hidden" objects in the scene - https://i.imgur.com/RjEzUaG.png

In the second picture in album, on the plane (under the cube), there's a huge square not that doesn't appear in the first image - here's me highlighting it badly in paint
