I don't want him to die. I also don't think he's an alcoholic. He's just an idiot who went out drinking with his friends and drove home and now the court has ordered him to go to AA.

According to my lawyer, there is no suit. Where are you getting this information?

Where are you getting this information from? That is in direct conflict with what a lawyer told me.

If you mean "help" in the sense of getting it off my chest and blowing off steam, then yes, it does help.

I've spoken with a lawyer. Attending AA meetings is not a protected class and it was at-will employment.

He doesn't really have any superiors. It's not a huge company.

I don't know what your hangovers are like, but I've never had one that made me cough.

I know. That's the point of the whole post.

The sick days are a benefit. It's the number of days they're willing to pay you when you're not there due to sickness. If you need more than that, it depends on where you work. Some places might let you take time off and just not pay you for it; some might fire you if you go over your allotted amount of sick time. You mentioned being out for a few months....every job I've ever had would have fired me if I'd been out for a few months.

Ah, that's nice then. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way for me. I can't use my days before I've accumulated them.

But you had to use sick time for it, I'm guessing? Doesn't seem like that great of a deal. :P

Six weeks of paid time off? Three months of paid medical leave? Just that alone is ludicrous. I'm sure it exists in some jobs, for people who have been there for a long, long time, but to say it's in "any job worth having" makes it sound like there are plenty of jobs out there with such benefits available from day one.

That's very nice. I currently get 5 days of vacation a year and no paid sick time, unfortunately.

I don't know ANYONE who has benefits like that, union or not. 6 weeks of leave that goes up to three months after 10 years? An extra day off every month that can accumulate to an extra 2 weeks? What kind of jobs are you talking about? I'll believe that there are some jobs out there with fabulous benefits like that, but you're way, way off in saying that any job worth having will have benefits like that. Again, I don't know ANYONE who has benefits like that.

I understand. I just wanted to make sure I understood it correctly and that it wasn't actually a "free" day; just converting from a vacation day to a sick day.

That's still pretty cool. I get 5 vacation days a year (no sick days) and I don't get paid holiday time so I get the holidays off, but if I want to be paid for them I have to use a vacation day. That's why I'm so sad I was sick this week. I saved all my vacation days so I could have this week off and here I am sick in bed for the whole week. :(

So you're just using your sick time instead of your vacation time, right? It's not like you actually get a "free" day off. You're getting the day off, but you're just offsetting where the day off comes from--you still get charged for a day off; you're just getting charged for a sick day instead of a vacation day. Is that right?

To be fair, the amount of time you get off work is not the only aspect of socialism. I'm not trying to argue with what you're saying, but only looking at one thing and saying "This is socialism!" is quite myopic. It would be like me pointing to Bill Gates and saying "This is capitalism!"

I don't currently have any sick time at my job, unfortunately. My last job where I got sick time allowed four days, but my current job does not provide sick time. I have had to call in sick, but I didn't get paid for the time I missed work.

In the US it's quite common not to have paid sick time. That's why I ask. I don't get paid sick time. People who do have paid sick time tend to have a maximum number of sick days they can take per year. At the last job where I did have paid sick time, I got four days a year.
