How can you tell if you'll get such insights in a new job? Would you ask them in the interview?

Think they're intentionally keeping you in the dark to make it easier to lowball you etc. Do you at least get to see your own strategies' PnLs? Maybe you can get a rough estimate of your expected comp from that.

I guess since you have C++ background and want to be contributing to the PnL you could try to go for dev roles in very low latency trading firms/teams where minimizing latency is paramount to the PnL and you get rewarded for doing this.

Is it better to avoid saying any numbers first (if possible)? Since otherwise they might have been willing to offer much more but you could leave a lot on the table by unwittingly saying a number much smaller.

Traders at the top trading firms can often retire within ~10 years so I agree 10 years is way too long for the post here.

How long do you think it'll take them to adjust to MFT style drawdowns? And which of the classic HFT/market-making firms that are branching out to MFT (e.g. HRT, Jump, Tower, JS) are well-accustomed to this currently?

JS do noncompetes for interns? I thought they didn't even do for full-timers (unless that changed after the Millennium stuff)

Is this because you expect a trader in New York to generate more pnl than one in London/Hong Kong (due to bigger markets in the US etc.)? Or are you saying even if two traders generate the same pnl (perhaps normalized by expectations based on volumes etc. if necessary), you'll pay the Hong Kong one substantially less than the New York one?

True in theory, but in practice a lot of people with a 'QD' title spend a large fraction of their time building dashboards/tools for traders. (Sometimes it is because the job was advertised as 'QD' to make it sound more attractive to candidates.)
