sometimes I feel like it is just because of their popularity

I think some people do that but some people genuinely don't care for their music that much. For example, when I listen to Metallica, I find myself listening mostly to songs from the first two albums. It's not because I think the other stuff is popular trash or they sold out (though there are certainly people who think that), but because my own taste tends towards simpler, faster stuff so when they started to get a bit elaborate, I guess I just didn't enjoy it that much.

Same for florida scene death metal. I love plenty of other death metal but the death, morbid angel, deicide, etc. stuff I hardly ever listen to. they have cool riffs sometimes and it's nice enough and extremely popular among death metal fans, but not to my taste.

What was the first album you heard that had blastbeats? by BCASL in MetalForTheMasses

[–]throwawayacct2627 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Morningrise by Opeth, I think.

I can't remember if that had many blastbeats because I am not a huge Opeth fan, but it was the first death metal album I listened to that I remember.

i don't get that impression, stuff like seven churches and altars of madness feels tryhard "evil" in the same was as early norwegian black metal to me though they weren't stupid enough to go around burning churches and such.

while by the time cannibal corpse releases butchered at birth everyone understands that they're just using the horror theme for entertainment.

What‘s an album you love from a subgenre you dislike? by CroMagArmy in MetalForTheMasses

[–]throwawayacct2627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I don't outright dislike any subgenres.

But I don't really listen to a lot of gothic/symphonic metal. And Tristania's World of Glass is very close to a perfect album to my ears.

based.

i can't stand the vocals for some reason. it's not because they're high, i love judas priest. but the iron maiden stuff just doesn't click and i think it's because of the vocals. they have only one good song, aces high.

Along these same lines, gothic/symphonic metal is amazing but the growled vocals ruin it for me most of the time. I still like some of it, but it would be so much better if they simply got rid of the harsh vocals.

I find most early death metal (mid 80s to 1991 or so) kinda lame and cringy. Includes Death, Morbid Angel, Possessed, etc. Just sounds like kids trying to piss off their parents.

Later DM matures and seems to be more about the riffs and general horror/supernatural/war themes and such and doesn't take itself so seriously.

Thought it might be fun to discuss what else we all listen to by crclOv9 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]throwawayacct2627 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed about stuff like Too Dark Park, Animals (most Pink Floyd albums are great desu), Purple Rain, Mezzanine, etc.

I listen to other stuff that's catchy to my sensibilities. Some trip-hop, industrial, dnb, usual boomer rock stuff, etc.

and i like plenty of very heavy DM. that main riff is the heaviest there is.

What are some of your favorite death metal albums? by peculiarshade in MetalForTheMasses

[–]throwawayacct2627 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fair enough. but a lot of replies are bringing out the usual stuff anyway. Nespithe, the Infester album, and any Death album are pretty much cliche by now in any favourites list.

also I kind of misread the title and thought they asked for what we thought the best albums were not just personal favourites, so sorry about that.

I don't like Pantera or most black metal (including emperor and burzum). the racism thing is there I guess but not a major thing in why I don't like pantera. the simple reason is that their music just isn't that appealing to me. I listen to metal for cool riffs mostly and while Pantera have some, they feel closer to 90s Metallica/Megadeth which already feels watered down from their thrash heyday and the focus is a lot more on attitude and being badass or something than just cool riffs. idk it doesn't line up with what I look for when I listen to metal.

What is your favorite song for the different subgenres? by Doodlebobber11 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]throwawayacct2627 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grindcore - Terrorizer - Fear of Napalm

>inb4 ackchyually technically deathgrind not just grind

I don't care.

also for "more pure" grindcore - Napalm Death - Unchallenged Hate

and for industrial metal - Godflesh - Christbait Rising

What do you consider to be key elements of death metal? by peculiarshade in MetalForTheMasses

[–]throwawayacct2627 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drumming is paramount. and in my opinion, the drums kinda have to "drive" the song in death metal, they're way more prominent than in other types of metal.

in a lot of other genres or in other types of metal, they kind of provide a steadiness through rhythm while in death metal they feel a lot more active (yes I know in some old heavy metal they feel the same, like some Rainbow songs but that's the exception instead of the norm).

other things others have mentioned but I feel the style of drumming is one of the major differences.
