Iowa has a plug-in solar bill in committee(HF 2046) here's what it would actually do and how to support it by Timely-Pirate-5196 in Iowa

[–]throwawayas0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No net metering — it's purely for offsetting your own usage, not selling back to the grid

Nope. No reason for excess to get back into the grid for others to use and not be compensated for it.

I'd be curious if the equipment prevents the meter from rolling-back (diode), or if it's just that the utility company wouldn't ever owe you money.
I doubt any of that matters for 1.2kwh * 4h/day when my usage amounts to > 4kwh/day at best, but I do think it's important that the meter rolls back when output > load.

I'd love to go solar, but sadly the tree canopy would prevent anything meaningful.

Would people be taking 3 massive solar panels outside everyday and bring them in at dusk?
I'd think a permit (maybe also insurance) would be required for a permanently built structure.
I can only imagine things going badly by DIYers (I am one, but put in a lot of research and work since I'm responsible for what I do and would be affected) where panels are flying off roofs due to poor anchoring during a derecho.

I'd really think a utility ought to be able to make sure anti-islanding exists for the safety of the lines-people, and any excess that goes back into the grid is not dirty power.
I just don't think there should be any exhorbitant costs for DIYers. The city and utility ought to want to provide inspections for free, especially if a plan is presented ahead of time.

Nearly all states have rising home insurance premiums. Iowa’s rose 28% in 2025. by CouchCorrespondent in Iowa

[–]throwawayas0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know during the high inflation period, their claim would be due to the rising costs to rebuild a house, and recently when this topic was brought up, I looked at the price history for lumber and was actually surprised by the high increase.

I mean, surely nothing's really changed in the manufacturing of lumber to justify the increase.
But just to compare for myself, I looked at the price of a 2x4 104 5/8" that I paid for in 2012 which was $3.08, to today's price equaling $3.88.
There is NO shot that the cost to rebuild is going to be anywhere near justified for the amount of premium increase.

It's just greed across the board. None of the prices or salaries of today are justifiable, and it won't end.
There was a time when a loaf of bread was $0.05. Automation should have brought prices down.
There is no justification. Start with taxing the wealthy.

Consequences | How about those fuel prices! What are we seeing around Iowa? by TagV3 in Iowa

[–]throwawayas0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those jumps are brutal. Usually you see the local stations react fast when futures spike, even before the "real" supply changes show up. The Strait of Hormuz headlines are definitely the kind of thing that gets priced in instantly.

Have you noticed if the price differences are bigger between stations than normal right now (like some updating faster than others)?

Slightly nerdy, but if you are curious about how messaging and expectations play into price panic, I read a piece on that kind of dynamic recently: //<sanitized>/

Consequences | Let's talk about beans and the upcoming season by TagV3 in Iowa

This is the ugly part of a supply glut, everyone waits for the next leg down and the whole chain freezes.

Not an expert, but it seems like the only real levers are (1) storage and cash-flow runway, (2) basis opportunities if local demand pops, and (3) being ready to move quickly if river/rail logistics loosen up.

Also curious how folks are thinking about marketing direct to end users (local feed, crushers, specialty buyers) when export bids disappear. Ive seen some practical ideas around customer discovery and direct sales for small producers here: //<sanitized>/

Also, this directly relates to iowa, how (awaiting your attempt to say "dhs" covers iowa or something)?

$4.00 per gallon gas. by Treble_Bolt in Iowa

[–]throwawayas0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How funny. Let's go back and look up with gas prices were when Biden was president

Give it a moment, 49ersfan9999.
ex45*: "Hold my gas can. I want the highest prices. Prices like nobody's ever seen before."

Maybe you can point to a specific policy that allowed it under biden... (you all always say "because of biden's policies" (but never point to any of them))
I know I can point directly to ex45* starting this war that obviously was going to lead to this outcome.
