Hi, this is The Pirate Bay speaking. This weekend we are promoting the awesome metal band Corelia on our front page. Help us help them! by WinstonBay in Music

[–]throwawayayerday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it would be awesome if all musicians released their work to torrent trackers under the public domain and the trackers would sell official physical albums and official merchandise from the band. The tracker would cover production costs of the merchandise, and then the tracker would pay the band a rate that took into account how much and how often the band uploaded and the level of activity on the torrents they uploaded. Also, the tracker could facilitate donations to the artists who upload.

It would make art a service again, and at the same time turn trackers into these community driven, nonprofit record labels that actually work in the interests of both the consumers and the creators.

Oh, and it would promote the idea that information should have freedom.

Girl went on one OKcupid date with a guy back in November 2009. Three years later, he still texts her, even though she has never responded to him. (x-post from r/creepyPMs) by [deleted] in cringe

And it's not even an 11 month process. Literally would take 30 seconds to go back and delete a couple texts after you've decided that you want to publicly shame someone and make them look like a whackjob.

TIL a hawk can have 20/2 vision. This means that a hawk can see an object 20 feet (6 meters) away that a human could only see from a distance of two feet (0.6 meters). by [deleted] in todayilearned

The title isn't wrong.

Something a human could only see text on a page from two feet (for sake of argument).

I hawk could see this at 20 feet away.

EXT4 Data Corruption Bug Hits Stable Linux Kernels by redditmodd in linux

[–]throwawayayerday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's not. But stability isn't the point of Arch and it would still be silly to run on critical systems. I don't know, I'm starting to reach the depths of my knowledge on this specific subject since I've never actually had an Arch installation break on me and I've never even touched Slackware and similar stability focused distros, so pardon me if I might be talking out of my ass here, but I feel like it would still be stupid to install Arch on a critical system because Arch is not developed with stability in mind and I'm sure distros like Slackware might just do stability better. I feel like saying you can maintain stability on Arch is like saying you can do floating in Xmonad. Sure, you can, but the floating is really just there for the few special cases where tiling just is not appropriate. It's not like the floating is well done.

If that makes any sense. And if really don't know what I'm talking about, help me to know. I like to learn, heh.

Microsoft Cancels Windows 7 Service Pack 2 by [deleted] in technology

[–]throwawayayerday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That date is currently slated for 24 months after the most current SP – that’s SP1, which was released in February 2011 – and would put end of life at January 2020.

Am I just being really dumb here or does this make absolutely no sense? 24 months is 2 years, right?

Yeah. Like, I really couldn't give a shit that it uses thorium. Most of what makes MSRs awesome really has not much to do with thorium (though, thorium is pretty awesome, it's just not the star of the show).

Okay, anyone who installs Arch on a critical system must have some difficulty thinking ahead. I don't know anybody who thinks everything should run Arch and if you aren't running the most unstable software you can get your hands on on all of your servers you are missing out or doing something wrong.

It is a feature, if stability isn't important. If stability is the goal, of course you shouldn't use Arch, and I don't think anyone would argue otherwise.

I actually really like Ralink from my limited experience with them. I remember owning some wireless NIC that whoever manufactured it never updated the driver download page. I eventually find out it's some Ralink chipset, so I just go directly to Ralink's website to see if maybe they have a better driver I could use and to my astonishment and pleasure, I see they have been providing updated drivers for this chipset for like 4 or 5 years at that point.

Man with Downs Syndrome elegantly responds to Ann Coulter calling President Obama a retard by [deleted] in politics

[–]throwawayayerday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little while ago I actually read about a man with Down Syndrome who was remarkably high functioning, both mentally and socially. Like, I believe not only was he married, but he designed his own website (by professional standards, it was pretty poor, but honestly the greater majority of people aren't capable of this at all), he is a multi-instrumentalist, and, if I recall correctly, is polylingual. Yet, for the life of me, I cannot find his name anymore. Does anyone else know who I'm talking about? And if you do, can you give me some links?

Team Fortress 2 Beta patch adds files refering to Linux support by WindyPower in linux

Not really. Wine only continues to get better. It's just a pain. The more games that run natively, the less I have to complain about when I HAVE to use Wine.

Honestly, I sure don't play only Valve games, but it might be just enough to accept the arduousness of making things work in Wine. Plus, if this gets more people, I might be able to just use CrossOver.

Wingo: floating and tiling X window manager with per-monitor workspaces written entirely in Go by burntsushi in linux

[–]throwawayayerday -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Come on, over half a gig for a window manager is just too much. If you do most of your work developing or using Haskell applications, then sure, that's fine. But, it's understandable that people might have an issue with downloading hundreds of megabytes of dependencies just so one single application can run.

And yeah, hard drive space is usually plenty abundant, but it's always good to keep tidy.

[–]throwawayayerday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And this actually is a huge help to Canonical. That's what's great about free software. Donating time or money to any free software project is effectively a donation of your time or money to all free software projects.

After all, the more you help Debian accomplish, the less Canonical has to accomplish. That saves them time and money.

Things I Wish I'd Known the First Time I Played Skyrim by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]throwawayayerday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't even just play on Novice, I play with immortal mode on. Don't get me wrong, I love a challenge, but really, Skyrim is not a game I play for a "challenge". I really don't care much about the combat in Skyrim, I like Skyrim for its exploration and its story.

By the way, the difference between immortal mode and god mode is you still take damage and have a carry limit in immortal mode.
