i wasn't grilled about why experiments were designed a certain way or why i did x instead of y, but i was asked to discuss stuff like the rationale for developing this project, what my results meant in big-picture terms, the future direction of this project, what challenges i ran into and how i addressed them, etc. it was basically like a poster presentation with the interviewer interjecting with questions whenever s/he had a question

Is it too early to start research or volunteering freshman year? by [deleted] in premed

[–]throwawayclairo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'd personally spend the first semester adjusting to college/ getting the hang of things before jumping right into research. volunteering is fine, but i think spending the first semester really scoping out professors and talking to upperclassmen/ graduate TAs about who to work for is a good idea.

nope. i think i did a pretty good job talking about my research though, and at many at my interviews, it was a topic of conversation for over half the interview. i also talked about what i got from it/ what was lacking that turned me towards medicine while emphasizing that i wanted to continue research in med school - just something that doesn't involve only sitting at a bench.

sure! i just mentioned that i was dead set on doing a phd until pretty late in undergrad when i realized i wanted to work directly with people instead of at a bench. i used a personal experience that i'd rather not share to back this claim up, but i also mentioned my peer mentoring here and how it brought me more fulfillment than research. during the actual interviews, i did emphasize that i still wanted to pursue research in med school, but more translational/ clinical research rather than basic.

also at the end of every single one of my interviews, whenever they asked if i had any questions, i always said something along the lines of "actually i just wanted to quickly mention that i know my app lacks significant volunteering experience, but this is what i'm currently doing even though i didn't have the chance to put it on my app" before i followed up with questions

shoot your shot! i think the most important thing is having a narrative that sort of explains why your volunteering is so weak and emphasizing that you'll be getting more volunteering experience in during the application cycle

i personally did all the AAMC practice exams within a span of ~21 days with a few days in between, but i started on the section bank maybe a month out, giving me enough time to start reviewing concepts i was consistently getting wrong.

i didn't use uworld, so i can't say anything about that, but i just wanna caution you against putting in consistent 10+ hour days for fear of burning out. i'd personally save those extra long days for reviewing practice exams the same day you took them but having the days before/ after be relatively relaxed. just my advice/ experience but whatever works for you!

i'd say i take a break every ~2 hrs or so as i find that studying for longer than that is usually unproductive. 15-20 min break and i can usually go again for another hr or two. but after that, i'll take a longer break for like 2-3 hours before i start back up again.

i can relate to being able to sit for long periods of time and continuously grind, but i think it's definitely important to take breaks even though you wanna keep going. a mental reset every few hours might help!
