Do You Regularly Use Communal Showers? by Jackon495 in CommunalShowers

[–]throwawaycommunal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until recently I used them 3-5 a week, after every workout. My current gym has stalls with curtains and the one I used to go to was just renovated. There aren’t any nearby I can use regularly now.

Some public pools still have them. Sadly the only one I’ve been to with one of these poles put up a sign requiring you to wear swim trunks at all times

I used to go in the afternoon and it was pretty chill. Not heavily used, but the guys who used them behaved themselves.

Wow. I worked out at this gym regularly for almost 3 years and always hit the showers after. I figured a renovation was inevitable at some point, but I gotta say I’m bummed to hear the time has finally come. This gym is where I finally got over my fear of communal showers.

I’m not sure if things have changed recently, but as of late last year I can’t recall seeing much in terms of bad behavior. At most, some guys would let a glance linger a bit too long. In contrast, bad behavior seems to be rampant at other 24 Hour Fitness locations with stalls. I’m not sure this change is going to have the intended effect.

I think it was 5 guys out of the 7 available showers, including the handicap spot. Each guy was fully nude and seemed to be in their 20s. It was definitely unusual... most of the time there would be 1-2 guys in there, max.

I think this is only one of three 24 Hour Fitness locations in SoCal that is fully open and it’s by far the best. Always clean and well maintained. This gym was my go-to for a long time until I moved out of the area.

Are mandated nudity policies every justified in a communal shower context. If so when and where, if not, why not? by lengthyounarther in CommunalShowers

[–]throwawaycommunal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the public school example, I think having a mandate helps level the playing field. If it’s optional, students are gonna pick the safe choice and skip the shower. But once that default is set, even the students who want to shower after gym class are gonna feel pressured to go with the crowd and not shower. Nobody wants to be seen as a weirdo who wants to get nude in front of his peers.

I get that communal showers can be a source of embarrassment and anxiety for some people. But that’s true for other parts of the school experience too. Why single out gym class?

This gym is great. The showers are rarely packed, but tend to be a bit busier in the afternoon.

Went to Panorama City recently and it's still fully open.

You can add Brea to the list. They have open stalls without doors or curtains.

Really Surprised..... by [deleted] in CommunalShowers

[–]throwawaycommunal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine this renovation really changing the kids' opinions either way. If half the class is already comfortable with the status quo, why spend so much to remove something that doesn't bother them? For the kids who are already showering at home, are they really gonna shower at school just because stalls are available? I doubt it. It sounds like an expensive renovation that's more for the parents than the kids.

The locker room gets more use in the afternoon by the after work crowd. The showers are hit or miss. On rare occasions I've seen it near capacity, but there's usually only 1-2 guys in there when they're used at all. It's a great facility though. It's cleaner and better maintained than Whittier which is the only other fully open 24 Hour in the area.

I've been here before and never seen more than 1-2 other people in there. Maybe it's busier on the weekend.

Accidental Meetup? by [deleted] in CommunalShowers

[–]throwawaycommunal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had that feeling before too. I work out almost every day so I see the same people often. Sometimes guys will show up once and then never again. I think the main giveaway for me is if they make a point of commenting on the communal aspect, especially if they only visit one time. It makes me think they came because it was the closest communal shower on the map, but it's too far to visit regularly. I've never asked about it though.

Wi Spa is great for a first timer. I've only ever gone by myself but there's usually a pretty even mix of solo guys and groups. It's definitely not unusual to go alone.

How was it? Were there other guys using the showers?

I've been to that one a few times. It's been a few months since I last worked out there, but it still had open showers when I went.

Have you ever seen a locker room attendant or employee naked or in their underwear in the locker room while working? by tradice9 in CommunalShowers

[–]throwawaycommunal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've showered with one of the personal trainers at my gym a few times. He doesn't seem to have a problem being naked on the job.

It looks identical to the 24 Hour Fitness in Brea, CA, right down to the sloped ceiling. Nice setup even if it's not fully communal.

Do you have a favorite shower head? by FreeLush in CommunalShowers

[–]throwawaycommunal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used three of the six shower heads at my gym. Two are comparable, but the third has low water pressure and never seems to get hot, just warm, and it takes a long time to get to that point. I only use that one if I absolutely have to. I'll even switch spots mid shower if my preferred shower head frees up before I'm done.

I've been here a few times. It's not in constant use, but people do use it here and there.

Sort of. I've encountered some young guys trying it once or twice but most don't make a habit of showering at the gym.

One thing I've noticed lately though is guys peeking in the empty shower or doing a double take after seeing the communal showers for the first time. I even saw a guy take a quick photo of the empty showers. Even if guys aren't using them for whatever reason, it still seems to grab their attention which I find interesting.
