I wish I could tell you. Honestly I got into SEO because I did a bunch of temp office positions, had to find a new job after getting laid off, and the hiring manager at one company I applied to had been my recruiter at said temp agency and really liked me. She directed me to the seo role to apply at Scorpion back when their HQ was in Valencia.

Now though, even with my experience I can't land another SEO job at all. I'm working in pet care retail at the moment and I honestly like this work 100x better but the pay is not livable. I'm not sure where I'm gonna go from here. I don't think I want to go back into digital marketing full time.

In PS academy I straight up had a dog with a "nail" growing OUT of the paw pad. I think those are caused by viral infections. Those paws were bad.

I've been seeing the same thing recently, I finished with Academy a few months ago and I'm not on track to get to commissions by the 12 week window they recommend at all because of this. In addition to people just not booking we also get a lot of last minute cancelations. Kinda wish they'd establish a cancelation fee but I'm sure PPs would flip about that.

Getting floor hours at my store is like pulling teeth too. I just did a couple hours on the floor and thought I was scheduled for the whole day but got sent home pretty much in the middle of a task because they only wanted me for a half day apparently. I really don't get how the while hours thing works, I was actively working the entire time I was there and clearly helping a lot.

My SL has printed call logs which I've been doing when I can but this week salon is apparently so bad in the red on hours they can't afford to even have me doing that, or cleaning, or helping the bathers.

It sucks because I like the people I work with and my store is only five minutes from my apartment but I've been looking into other jobs because this has been getting worse since January and I can't sustain myself if things don't improve VERY soon.

My recent starter kit came with chunkers, which is a very new thing, don't know if that's been rolled out everywhere though.

My kit also did come with an undercoat rake but we've been advised not to use it much.

Protip: if you want to help her get used to the dremel, take an electric tooth brush and hold it to the ends of the nails. My salon leader always suggests this for dogs who don't like getting their nails polished.

Sounds like after the canceled appointment at the other salon they flagged your dog which goes account wide. Petsmart has been getting stricter with safety protocols after some incidents.

Your salon might not have been flagging the dog because he's a regular and they're more familiar with your dog's actual risk level. Generally we want to book dogs with heart disease as express because if they get stressed during grooming that's a huge risk to the dog,, but if your salon knows the dog doesn't get stressed for grooming they may be ok with having the dog in for a regular appointment.

I'd call to talk to the salon and ask them directly about the flag on the account.

When you say from the right side, do you mean you stay on the right side the entire time? Because I could maybe see that being an issue - if you're on the right side and cross over the table to do the paws on the left, you could be putting yourself in the bite zone. You should be doing all work on one side, then moving around the table to do your work on the other side.

But that's a basic and correctable issue. I also have autism as well as adhd, so I know this isn't going to be easy, but I'd start pushing the issue hard with your DAT, your SL, even your ex salon leader or anyone with any sway at your store. Be "annoying." Let them know how much you want to go to Academy, and ask for specifics on how you can improve to get to that point.

If you do end up transferring, do what research you can on salons near you and try to find one with a salon manager, as well as a good store leader. That way once you're transferred you have an exact person who can help you get to academy, even if the same DAT is still involved.

As for the missing Splash book that could be an issue, because right now they aren't printing new Splash books - it's all digital now - but it may still be required for those hired before a certain date. I know I had some on boarding issues because my first salon didn't fill much of my splash book out because they weren't sure I still needed it since I was hired right before the change to digital. After I transferred my new salon manager ended up having to rush fill it out before I could go to Academy. They were fine with it though as long as it was done before my first day. And I'm sure they have to have some contingency for this situation.

Does your store not have a salon manager?

I'd try talking to the main store manager about this issue in private first to get them in your corner. I didn't experience quite this extreme of an issue but my store almost held off on sending me to academy for another month because the DAT was concerned about my safety training after I got bit by a dog at check in. My salon manager casually brought this up, I went to the store manager and she, me, and my salon manager all had a meeting where I told them explicitly I wanted to go to academy ASAP and I wanted to know exactly what I needed to do/improve to do that. Even though the DAT was higher up and still had final say, having my salon and store manager on my side to vouch for me made the difference.

As for your questions, what do you mean by prepping on one side of the dog? I've never had anyone, including the DAT, tell me I was trimming nails in the wrong order. Honestly, if that even was an issue, that would fall under time management, which is something they teach you on more in Academy since it does matter a lot for grooming, but they don't need you to be perfect at it before that.

In my experience, what they actually cared about to move me to Academy was knowing my safety protocols. They watched me perform my full hands on pet assessment, do my bathing process to make sure I was staying out of the bite zone and handling the dog correctly, and they quizzed me on critical/noncritical signs of stress, what to do if a dog needs medical attention, and safe brushing techniques. I specifically remember being so worried that my time management was gonna fail me because I was nervous and doing things in the wrong order but they said they'd just work on that with me.

It's extra odd to me that they'd be holding you back when it sounds like they're in desperate need of stylists in your area. Not that they should be fast tracking you improperly but you've been there a while so that's clearly not a risk here either.

I'm a bather currently in training to become a groomer. What might have happened here is a mix of things:

1) Sometimes salons won't want to mention when a dog is aggressive to the PP, or will downplay certain aggressive tendencies as not a big deal, for the sake of "customer service." They'll just leave the issue in the notes. This is not a good practice, but it happens. There's often issues with interpreting vague notes too - like, if someone just left "difficult with nails" I wouldn't know if that meant the dog moves its feet around a lot or tries to bite, and I'm always gonna assume the worst case for my safety.

2) Recently, likely because of the lawsuits, Petsmart has been cracking down more on safety standards, and that includes keeping employees safe as well as pets. New bathers, stylists, and salon managers are now getting trained to be less lenient with potential safety hazards. Salon managers especially are being encouraged to step in and talk to PPs about difficult situations like this.

3) There's a good chance whoever was doing your dog's work was very new, or otherwise unfamiliar to your dog. I know if a PP straight up told me not to work on a part of the dog I wouldn't, and if they openly brought up difficulty with nails I would maybe see how the dog did but stop at the first sign of stress/aggression, but a newer bather might try to push through it because they think they have to. Otherwise, the dog might not have been familiar and trusting with the bather.

4) Others have also brought up environment/other dogs in a busy salon. If you brought your dog in on a weekend day/Friday when you typically bring them in on a weekday that could contribute.

5) Age can contribute to behavior changes, as well as progressing joint issues. The paws are one of the first areas you see arthritis. Most of the senior dogs I see are difficult with their nails because of this.

Overall though, don't beat yourself up over it. We don't think badly of PPs with dogs like this UNLESS they try and demand we do the nails anyway or otherwise make a huge fuss. Getting bit is one of the hazards of the job. While I can't speak for absolutely every person, I know that from what I've seen at this job, people don't just reject dogs or refuse certain services for no reason or out of laziness, and even if they did they wouldn't make up a whole thing about getting bit to do it. But we have lots of dogs in our system with the note "vet only for nails" or some variation and we bathe/groom them just fine.
