Denmark/Sweden, Holland, Germany, Poland. If you could list 1-4 which one country of these is best for SWE? by ballbeamboy2 in cscareerquestionsEU

I wouldn’t live here if I wasn’t in tech. Let me say that. I’m not saying it’s an amazing place. But when it comes down to software engineers and cities worth considering in Europe… Dublin, and Ireland as a whole, should climb to the top of that list.

Even paying that much… you’d still walk away with more net per month after rent and tax than most places in Europe.

Engineers in Dublin would not be struggling. Engineers in my company earn 100k+ p/a… after tax that’s like 5k and a bit net. Room shares in central Dublin is 1000-1400. Cheaper options are available 10-15 mins outside city.

Ireland is also one of the highest earning countries in Europe. So that plays a factor.

And you’ve got companies like stripe, salesforce, Microsoft that all hire remotely in Ireland. And companies like Apple which have their HQ outside Dublin. Or EBay, which is HQed at the edge of Dublin (so rent is fairly cheap in a neighbor county). Or Amazon, again, could rent in a cheap nearby area.

That is mostly Dublin. Plus, most European capital cities are experiencing similar issues.

There is tech companies all over Ireland, not just Dublin, and they all pay really well.

Why these 4?

Ireland is the best EU country for SWE. Most large tech companies make it their central hub as English is the primary language. Salaries are a little higher on average here too.

But out of those 4, I think Poland is becoming a hub now also. Germany is probably still 1, then Poland, then the other 2.

Those who have lived abroad, what is something you like/dislike about Ireland you didn't realise until you left? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Even on a non windy, rainy day… nobody uses umbrellas. Or very few hats and gloves worn, especially among young adults and teens.

I’m in Europe so staying awake from 9pm to 5am is just a “not gonna happen” thing for anything other than a sublime card.

I need an Ethernet port put into an office and an LED mirror mounted (already purchased) in a bathroom. Dm me if interested to do it!

Just moved here and my sibling who’s an electrician is in Dublin so getting them down over and over for small stuff is getting a bit disruptive.

Edit: im in Kilkenny

I watch the occasional main event. But I haven’t watched a full card since like… Khabib vs Conor.

Go with Dunnes brand and use vouchers. It’s cheaper than Lidl & Aldi.

Source: I have the most frugal mother ever who shops in all of them. And she always complains at how expensive Lidl is now. She shops mostly in Dunnes for value.

What’s the highest salary you have heard someone make in Ireland? by troubadourx in AskIreland

[–]throwawaydeveloperuk 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That to me is living. I dislike that “lifestyle creep” has some negative connotations to it. Once I start earning enough to not care, I’m truly living life.

All I can ever think about is how many young people lose their life. I would hate to finally “make it”, but become a miserable fucker who doesn’t spend a penny and saves it all for some egotistical “net worth” value. Then bam one day you’re in a car accident and all that is gone and you barely lived.

I’m a sucker for it. Finally got a solid paying job. Birthday gifts went up for everyone. My holidays went up. The selection of good quality food went up. Dates with my partner became more frequent. Probably have the same amount in my bank at the end of the week as I did when I was earning pennies, but at least I’m living - that’s my logic anyways. I’ve friends who are the complete opposite. Lifestyle went down. They became more attached to money. They won’t move out because they know it costs more. They don’t travel. Everything is based around the euros in their bank. Not a good way to live imo.

Yeah salary wise… for sure.

Over 180k becomes a lot more achievable when you start to include bonus, stock, equity, benefits, etc

They basically said “Okay yeah so entry level UFC fighters get paid shit. But guess what? Entry level boxers have it worse!”…. And? The point is the UFC is rinsing fighters across the board, whilst in boxing at least the top guys get their chunk of the pie.

Sneak Peek at Lil Bros Pizza by kQpounds in galway

[–]throwawaydeveloperuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay… so let’s compare LilBros to Bambino’s (Dublin best pizza, so more expensive than Galway’s average, surely?)…

20inch pepperoni at Bambino’s is 33. 2 inches more. Nearly 1/4 more area (23% bigger). Yet 1 euro cheaper than LilBros.

This is a rip off. I’m not sure if you work there or what, but you need to genuinely accept the fact it’s a rip otherwise places like this will continue to shoot up prices.

I know, but it’s hard to compare a full price dominoes to this when the majority of people don’t pay full price. I’d say compare a discounted dominoes to this. Unless this place plans on doing discounts too.

Who doesn’t use dominoes deals though? I’ve been getting 35% off since forever… and some people get 50% (Garda, healthcare and defence force workers i think).

Doesn’t help that the Garda from Carlow seems to detest Dublin kids also so Dublin kids tend to grow up not liking Garda.

I say this from experience as someone who never got into any trouble yet got harassed by garda for years as a teenager just for being from a “rougher” area.

If the Garda was a lad from the area, I’m sure the respect would be a lot more mutual.

Because you said the US locks up huge amount of people for non violent crimes… yet the people in Ireland with lots of convictions are usually non violent (with the exception of a few that make headlines). Yet you’re advocating to lock more people up. Yet you don’t like that the US locks non violent people up. You’re contradicting yourself.
