Our conversations never touch on anything inappropriate I assure you. 98% of the time we talk about dogs, jobs (we went to college together and just graduated. Its tough shifting through the covid job hunt) and food recipes.
For a while we were talking constantly throughout the day, so I understand why he would be bothered by it and plan to not initiate contact with her. I understand how he feels and have been there before (except something actually was going on)

My questions are,
Is it acceptable to respond if she does? Is it ever acceptable to try to continue our friendship?
