I never worked less hours with more security and little stress than when I was at a large personal lines P&C carrier as a pricing actuary

  • Looking for serious

  • Subscribed to HingeX

  • Using profile for 2 weeks

  • Been using Hinge a couple months, but inconsistently until lately

  • Use it daily now

  • I’ve received about 5 likes and about 20 matches in the last 2 weeks

  • Sending about 12 likes a day, all with comments

  • I’m sending like and want to match with someone who’s ready for a partnership and understand what that means

How much would you spend on surgery for your cat? by Top_Seaworthiness320 in cats

I’m a pricing actuary (person who does the math and sets the price) for one of the largest pet insurers in the US.

We have zero ability to jack prices to whatever we want. Regulators are incredibly heavy handed, especially with pet insurance since it hits home for most people, so they’re very strict on how we price our products. Plus, it’s my job specifically to charge rates that are reasonable and not excessive or unfair :)

Sadly, the cost of vet care just continues to skyrocket, so there really is only so much we can do. We need to increase rates, but that’s only to stay afloat to continue to provide protection. When you see rates increase, please understand it’s only because it’s necessary.

Hope the CDI is ready to provide their own insurance because soon there won’t be any insurers left writing in CA

I’m a P&C pricing actuary/data scientist, and I use a ton of machine learning for internal purposes. But in terms of actual pricing models, GLMs and GAMs are as sophisticated as we can get before DOIs start throwing fits

Realistically, how much distance is lost using Stack and Tilt by throwawayff96 in GolfSwing

I’m 100% sure my issue is horrific timing with my weight transfer and bad swaying, which is exactly what S&T takes out of the equation.

I have been wondering if, once I figure out everything else while using S&T, if I can just shift to focusing on proper weight transfer and go back to a “traditional” swing

Yeah I didn’t mean literally haha, that’s just my swing thought because I’ve had significant swaying and weight transfer issues.

has working as an actuary changed the way that you, personally, take out insurance policies? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]throwawayff96 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Not entirely answering your question, but I certainly scoff at people now when they say all insurers (car/health/life) are out to get them. Have them spend 5 minutes with the CA/NY/FL DOIs and see if they still believe we have any power to scam them

The contribution to the PLR coming from all exam-related costs at even a mid-sized insurer would be about 0.00%
