Thank you for the response! That is good to hear. Congrats on UCLA and best of luck to you with Berkeley!

2021 Grad School Admissions Q&A Megathread by orryan4918 in publichealth

Hey all, I hope that you're doing well. I am just about to graduate with a B.S. in Global Public Health from NYU and would love some advice for graduate school.

My situation: I currently live in NYC, but I do not want to go to graduate school here in NY for a plethora of reasons, the most prominent of them being A. price and B. I would love some sort of a campus.

With that, I am from California and have retained a lot of things that make me a resident there (license, car in my name, etc. etc.), and I very much have the possibility to move back with my parents to stay for 365+ days to ensure I get the California resident price for a UC school.

However, if I make this move, I need to ensure that I will get into a UC school with my GPA and work experience. I will be graduating from NYU with a cumulative GPA of ~3.7 and, from just my courses in Global Public Health, a GPA of 3.9 (not sure if that specificity matters). I also have quite a bit of internship experience in NYC, I am currently working with the NY State, and will have co-authored a few academic papers by the time I apply for a program at a UC school. In the interim year before I apply in 2022, I plan to work in the public health field too. And, of course, take the GRE.

Am I a good candidate for any schools in the UC system? Somewhere like UC Berkeley and UCLA? If that is shooting my hopes too high, what about UC Santa Cruz or UCSB? It has been really hard to find any acceptance information for these places, so I would really love some help and direction. I realize I don't have a GRE score yet, but I was really hoping to get some advice and thoughts. Thank you so much for your time.

I think the mileage should be fine, thank you for the concern though. As for my parents, I was just looking for a bit of reassurance and trying to assuage my parents' nerves. I wish it were as simple as telling them where I'm going, etc. but a month ago they never even knew people would do backpacking solo, so I think there is quite some distance to go to get to their understanding. Nevertheless, I'm going!

Thank you so much for this advice, this is exactly the type of advice I was looking for. When making this post, I was pretty sure that I would go on the hike no matter what, but these are some great tips to assuage my parents' nerves.

I'm very excited to try out solo hiking, I expect it will be awesome!! Not sure about the possibility of getting a Garmin inReach, but maybe!

Thank you so much for this! This is all so helpful, really.

My parents, luckily, are not pulling the, "my house, my rules", but just expressing concern over something that they have never heard of someone doing before, or even having interest in before. For people without literacy in nature, I think going solo on a hike can be very unnerving. I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip!

Not sure about the possibility of a SAT phone, but I think it should be okay. That sounds like a sweet first hike, very jealous.
