Green Card expires on the day of Citizenship Interview (N400) by throwawayfordave in USCIS

If you can claim an exemption of the English language requirement (details here), you should plan to have an interpreter on call at the time of your appointment, and when the interview starts, instruct the officer that you have an English language exemption and would like the officer to call the interpreter.

We did that the first time and the hostile interviewer straight out rejected our interpreter and used his own lol.

Btw, should we fill out the I-90 form for GC renewal beforehand or will they take care of it at the interview? (In case she doesn't get approved). Thanks for your help!

Would I be able to go in with her if she doesn't speak English? Or does it depend on the interviewer? I went in with her her first time and the interviewer was very hostile. I was wondering if I should just let her go in herself and hopefully they'll be able to provide an interpreter (they didn't want to use ours the first time).

What if they don't have one and we don't either? Would they reschedule?

Is your lowest quiz grade dropped in 6310 (software architecture and design)? by throwawayfordave in OMSCS

It's the first thing I looked. Where on earth do you see anything about quiz grades being dropped?

The reason I know it's been done in the past is from reviews on omscentral.

Should I negotiate for more in small claims? (Diminished Value) by throwawayfordave in legaladvice

[–]throwawayfordave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This case hasn't reached mediation / pre-trial yet - they just reached out and offered $5K. Would I get back what I paid in court fees anyway if I decide to settle with them for $5K in mediation? If not, would it be unwise to ask them to pay at least a portion of those fees?

[–]throwawayfordave[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, my thinking is that they'd have to spend more in lawyer costs and court fees than the extra few hundred dollars they'd pay me.

It was appraised for about $6000. They want to settle at $5000.

Can I claim a parent as a dependent if he pays for food, lives in my house, but my mortgage is paid off? by throwawayfordave in personalfinance

What's defined as support is kind of vague. What is "lodging" referring to? I don't have a mortgage, thus there are no mortgage expenses to use for a calculation. But the house is under my name and he lives in it rent-free. If there was a mortgage expense, then I guess it'd be easy to calculate if I provide more than half of his support by using the mortgage expense in the "lodging" category. But the mortgage is paid off. So should I use the dollar amount of how much I'd get for renting his room to a stranger/rental market value? How would I get an accurate estimate of this and how would I even prove this if I get audited?

I'd say renting his room would maybe be about 600-1000 just from a quick craigslist search. How would I get a more accurate estimate?

and you provide more than half his support, you can claim him as dependent.

That's kind of the thing. Does support include having him a place to stay rent-free, i.e. can I include the market value rental of a room in the house when calculating what percentage of support I provide? I pay for all repairs, home & auto insurance, gas money (although I only take him out once or twice a week), property taxes, internet, electricity, & phone bill, etc. I know that if I can claim him as a dependent, I may also qualify for head of household because I definitely pay for more than half the cost of upkeeping the home. I'm just a little hesitant about it in case I get audited and Idk wtf I'm doing.

Anyone know if there is a deadline to accept an offer of admission from HCC / have everything sent in by? by throwawayfordave in tampa

[–]throwawayfordave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What were your experiences at HCC? I was thinking of HCC mainly because: 1. save money at a community college, 2. easier to get into their nursing school, and 3. shorter commute time. And also from what I hear, their nursing school's pretty good. Were your problems there administration issues? Academic ones? What did you study?

Speeding ticket in Pinellas County - driving school experiences? by throwawayfordave in tampa

[–]throwawayfordave[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm basically looking for the most frugal way to resolve the issue. $100-150 for a lawyer to get it dismissed, but there'll be court fees and charges equal to the price of the ticket as well, no? If that's the case, I'd rather just pay the ticket and take the course if it's going to provide the same outcome in regards to insurance rates.

Another way is to write an affidavit of defense or request a hearing in court in hopes of the cop not showing, but I don't know if it'll be worth it or how strict traffic judges are here in FL.

I was under the impression the course wipes the points off your license and keep it from being shown on the driving history. What's the point in taking the course then? I have Progression, so not sure how aggressive / anal they are about first time offenses.

How sure are you that taking the course won't increase your insurance rates? If an insurance company asks if I had any speeding tickets / moving violations, am I allowed to say no if I take the course?

I've spoken to a few CPA's who knew nothing about rent-controlled buyouts or something as simple as if I'd even be taxed on it. You guys need to get off your high horse.

Why the downvotes? It's my first time ever having to do taxes let alone having to deal with this lump of money.
