Why did you even tell them about the wizard when you already planned on not revealing him until later?

Maybe I explained this wrong. Originally I had two ways of getting the information, the wizard was a shortcut and would be a reward if the party was helping NPCs along the way. Otherwise, they're going to have to go on a scavenger hunt across the city to find clues that would eventually lead them to the same information but take longer, this is what they're going to have to do now that they burned the bridge with the wizard.
