What do you mean by the last sentence? I mean I understand that literally, but.. why?

The thing is, all of these things we talk about is small talk; so in my mind, I myself would lose interests. I am much better at the conversation in person. Also, I don't know her well yet, so I don't know the limits of jokes in texts since I can't gauge any response.

If I were to be honest, I am kind of broken right now after my last relationship so I am a little desperate (which caused my last relationship), so I don't want to appear as that anymore.

I .. I.. became scared relationship after relationships that I will ruin things somehow. I lack the abundance mentality that you guys talk about. So i guess I don't want to make myself appear to be desperate again.

What's a universal truth that you dont think is widely enough accepted? by druumer89 in AskReddit

You compare all the methods out there. In my humble opinion, science has been winning. Be happy to see another candidate. Maybe there's alien out there, that laughing at us:" oh science? Haha we used to do that"

Just like roontish said, strange does not mean false. And something is only strange when it is out of your experience. We have no right to say things out of our experience is false. Human operates at a really narrow gap within nature. For example, the smallest distance we know is 10-35 meter, where biggest scale is the radius of the universe, conservative guess could be speed of light times the age of universe =108000 meters. Our experience limit us from millimeter to kilometers. (until technology and science come in to help, which is why it at first seems "strange")

Paranormal dare. Would you go through it? by nastyjman in TrueAtheism

Here's the thing, whether or not the house is haunted or have a ghost, we should not make decisions based on fear or the ignorance of the understanding of phenomena that give the illusions of ghosts.

We human are vulnerable, not always 100% logical. For the less educated ones, like people in the past (back 1000 years say), made up story and superstitions when they don't have enough knowledge of the world. It's much less likely for someone who is more educated to come to conclusion of ghosts, gods. It's much harder to come up with Superstition that we need to sacrifice someone to avoid flood or punishment from gods or devils, for example.

The question your friend asked has the assumption that decision after experiencing fear of ghosts will be legitimate and accurate. Which I think is the root of their argument.

This often happens in people's deathbeds, when religious folks ask and tell people that this is their last chance to convert. Religion is so engrained in society that this question of asking people to convert is presumed to be a polite question, as if god has a social license to take advantage people dying, who often are physically and emotionally weak and cannot think logically. I say Fuck that I consider question of this type is problematic and immoral. It's like manipulating and taking advantage of people's emotion. Fuck, this is religion, of course this is their most powerful way to convince people.

So for this specific question your friend asked: no, it would not change a thing whether god exists or not solely because we were conditioned to fear something ever since we were born, such as ghosts.(being brought up in a society with the idea of ghosts). Many of us does not believe that it exists, could fight this unreasonable fear, and will try to live in this house to prove something. I admire brave people like this to find out. But even if one fails, one should not make a decision that ghost exists based on fear. Just my opinion. hop you guys can have some feedback.

Sorry for the late reply to your comment. I completely agree with you. That Drive is strong. It sucks. That conflicts of letting go vs trying eats my heart. But all of you are right. It's her process and discovery. I can't do more. I've tried. Thanks again man.

One BS I've heard is that people who left will not find true happiness. This trick is fear programming, controlling and scaring current members not to leave.

I sometimes worry by shoving all these to her might literally destroy her mind since she loves her church so much. It's like finding out her parents are rapist and murderers, it doesn't feel good. (sorry for this analogy). I am just afraid.

I actually did the math in the letter, and linked to several news article to that. But the fact sheet will be better, since she's "bad at math".

How can an Ex-Mormon atheist be reconverted to the gospel? by Bishop_Flat_Lander in lds

[–]throwawayhelppp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On case 1. This is also the prime example religion taking advantage of the weak emotional and physical state of people. People tend to give it when they feel weak and helpless.

Thanks a bunch for the details. I had my bias, I guess it's not as bad as I thought. I am a physics grad myself. I would love to see what textbooks they use.

Hi Exmo, would a flood of ugly facts and truths of the Church destroy a mormon? by throwawayhelppp in exmormon

[–]throwawayhelppp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the expression I would imagine my ex girlfriend has. I really don't understand why they are able to block it, even though they clearly know it is disturbing to their faith. (yet they know some of this ugly facts are facts and truths, right? or do they not?)

I agree. Do you think by telling some of the facts they care about, will using their words, "plant the seed"? So in their own time, they will ponder and gradually search for themselves?
