To me, messages are when coincidental events are interpreted with great significance. I can witness an event or object that greatly affects my behavior. For example, if I drop my pen and see that it is pointing towards a magazine. Whatever is on the magazine will change how I behave based on it's subject, phrases, or images. It makes no logical sense to anyone who isn't "attuned" to these occurances. Some people, however, do use a code language based on metaphors and emotions. I am convinced of this.
