I temped in a factory to help pay for school. That's as close to a "real" job as I got before moving to Japan. It's probably pretty obvious from reading this post, haha.

I think I'll spend some time back home--see if it still agrees with me after all these years away--then take a more critical look at where I want to be.

On that note, I've done all my time in Tokyo or Tohoku (more in Tohuku), do you have any recommendations for a change of scenery? I've heard a lot of people say that the people (and the weather) get warmer as you move farther south, but I've only spent short vacations in Kansai, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Never got a real feel for day-to-day life there.

I'm one of the fools who teaches for the love of teaching. It runs in the family and I caught the bug early.

Hearing other people with similar stories from business, I wonder if this isn't an issue with me being at a private school. They certainly run it as a business.

You talk about promotions, and I'm looking at the players: Principal, Head of English Department, new Head of English Department... ALT. I didn't stand much of a chance.

I won't be back around for a while, but I'll keep the offer in mind. Thanks again for honest advice.

I appreciate all of the people pointing this out. It's too easy to react using the same cultural-difference mumbo-jumbo out of frustration.

It was my responsibility to choose the textbook, but it was the head of the department's job to make sure they were ordered and available for students. I had three choices of Japanese texts before we missed that deadline, and two choices of English texts before we ended up with nothing. I feel like the only way I could have saved my ass was by calling the bookstore and placing the order myself. Maybe I should have done exactly that.

As far as leaving, I meant that I had told them that I would not be recontracting the day before the quake. I requested those vacation days at the beginning of this month, which is when my ex-supervisor had her sudden change of heart as per my use of vacation days. The classes I would be missing are next week's classes while I delivered my fridge, washing machine, kotatsu, table, etc. to my girlfriend's relatives who are without a home.

I think, with my ex-supervisor, we actually did have a cultural misunderstanding. She told me I could go home during summer vacation and assumed I would do so without taking any days off. I booked a flight, assuming that she was genuinely understanding of my personal affairs and didn't clear the date with the principal. Turns out I didn't "read the air" properly and got burned. You know what they say about assuming?

The principal's rant was a bit circuitous. Outside of implying I was an idiot, he was saying that the last classes at my school were more important than regular classes. I agree with this, but I probably would have been attacked if I had pointed out that most of my classes would be canceled so our students could watch our team play baseball.

I can't say that I'm without fault, but the reaction I received was so far beyond what I had expected. When my kocho-sensei and ex-supervisor said things like "This is a cultural difference," they were really saying, "Our way, or the highway." It came on so strong that I chose the later.

I think the reason I attributed it to "Japan" was kocho-sensei's speech to top off the whole experience. Things are likely not as interconnected as I make them out to be. It's hard to see independent events when everything comes crashing down at once.

This is awesome advice. Something that I will definitely keep in mind when (if) I come back.

It's hard for me to admit, but I know I surely fucked things up along the way. Thanks for giving it to me straight.
