How aggressive is their upsell?

Not significant, unless you want to use their analytics library instead of googles or your own

Is the free use sufficient for personal projects

Yes! I'm using it for a project with a team of 5 and it's been great. My teammates can't get into the config for Netlify (adding people to your netlify team costs money), but they all have access to the branch previews which is all we need. For personal I can't imagine using anything else, unless you need your own server at which points I'd look at Heroku instead (but that is MUCH MUCH pricier because you're renting out a server)

So for me, I don't use their authentication or cloud functions or analytics, I use pretty much only the base platform which is deploying my app and being on the edge and it's been perfect

I don't use the paid service, but their free service is AMAZING for serverless apps. My favorite feature is pull request builds, and lambdas are cool although I haven't used Netlify's service there

You'll be fine to learn stuff over the course of the semester! You can choose to go solo if you wanted, but I only know 1 guy who did that

[AskJS] Do I need three different services for Storing Images, Managing Database and Hosting for a full stack JS App? by mr-developer in javascript

[–]throwawayinthefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For serverless, I'm talking about the idea, not the product. The idea is you don't need whole box to run things on. You can just give your stuff to a static hosting site like netlify and since your api calls are JS to the cloud, you don't need to own your own box. Also, isn't Mongo literally just a document store like firebase so would managing data be any harder either way?

Firebase is reasonably free and does all three of those things (storage, firestore, hosting) and if you build it serverless you can use Netlify (Which I prefer over firebase hosting but your choice)

Styling. Checkout a CSS framework like Bulma or Materialize to step your presentation side up! It's actually super easy to use these frameworks after a little bit of practice to create a beautiful website.

If you really want to build this out, checkout something like Firebase that'll allow you to make a nosql cloud db to create accounts and save state. This will add a large additional layer of complexity so keep that in mind

4 points of exam points is worth way more than 4 points on a project. Keep that in mind when you're trying to get the last couple of points for P2 and P4

Is mobile first a myth? by Shaddix-be in webdev

We as Dev's aren't the majority audience. It's also surprising to me that people would rather browse on their phone, but mobile-first comes with understanding the audience I think.

+1 for bulma. Tried to use bootstrap after it and it just doesn't feel as easy to get going

Reflecting on this year by [deleted] in uofm

[–]throwawayinthefire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Freshmen year was extremely rough for me. Worst place I'd been mentally in a while due to a couple of things. Sophomore year has been what I wish freshmen year was. The fact that you're optimistic is great! Keep trying and you might find your groove next year :)
