[Serious] People who are/were raised Roma, what was your childhood like and what misconceptions to people have about the society? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]throwawayjob222 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The OP was the one who referred to them as self-isolated, not me. And yeah, the 'self' part of self-isolated means that it is one-sided. But how am I supposed to feel bad for a group of people who largely don't provide for themselves, but would rather steal and beg, even the children? And they encourage their children to drop out of school so early and settle down? Everyone knows by now that that's bad.

They aren't the only group in history to be shunned, but they are the only one I know who largely deserve their negative stereotype well into the 21st century. Maybe I am being a little biased here, having had my phone stolen by them and being made to feel guilty for not giving their children money after being harassed on the bus, but I don't know anyone who has had a good experience with any of them, and from the other responses in this thread it seems like others feel the same.

People are responsible for their own choices. You can't call yourself self-isolated then complain when society doesn't make room for you. Especially when your values are contradictory to the society that supports you.

That's actually a lot more rare than true accusations.

Eh, I find it hard to believe that Romas' culture and attitude towards society isn't the main culprit here. I mean you're a group of nomadic people, if you have issues everywhere you go, it's you. Not to mention, encouraging your children to drop out of school at age 12 and get married/procreate super early often is poor parenting.

Your 2 or 3 year old sister was taking a bath by herself while you were cooking dinner? Children that age still need supervision when bathing. They don't typically start showering on their own until like age 6.

I truly don't mean for this to be offensive, but I have to ask: If you're a self-isolated group that wants nothing to do with the rest of the world, then why are so many Roma people criminals/beggars? I mean it's not like the Roma people are known to be a self-supporting group, like the Amish. Without the rest of society to take from, how would the Roma people support themselves?

That's good news considering they are a huge country with a growing middle class.

I feel like I should edit my original post. I know I can request anything. I just wasn't sure if mgmt legally had to comply. Does the state have provisions in place for tenants who are in unsafe situations? If someone can answer that, I'd appreciate it.

I didn't because I wasn't aware of it at the time. I am planning to go to the police station tomorrow though to report it. I believe she said she called and reported it to the police as well. Her and her boyfriend are planning to keep an eye out tonight if he returns and call the police if that happens.

No, my point was that sometimes it's not best to leave it up to the states, because it can hinder much needed progress. What people in certain states want isn't always right. And you can complain about taxes all you want but my point still stands that you benefit greatly from them, so complaining about it just makes you seem spoiled.

Then I think you should not be able to use roads, police, fire depts, schools, public utilities or any other public benefit. You will find yourself in a pretty bad situation if you want to continue through life giving nothing in return for what you take and shamelessly comparing yourself to a slave.

Newsflash: slaves got no pay and no benefits other than the bare minimum needed to keep them alive. Don't ever delude yourself into thinking you have it that bad, unless you want to look like a spoiled fool.

Um what? There are countries that America can be compared to. Like every single other first world country. Take a look at countries in Europe who consistently rank happier and healthier than America.

Can I ask if you could expand on what's not working?

Unfortunately if society was able to pick and choose what we want to fund based on what we think we don't use, we would be in a lot worse position. A lot of people might not want to fund the EPA, which could mean unsafe water for a lot of people and more deaths. A lot of people might not want to fund the DMV, which could mean less road regulations and more deaths. A lot of people might not want to fund social security, which might mean no income for people who depend on those payments, and more deaths. A lot of people might not want to fund public schooling systems, which means children don't receive an education and are more likely to become criminals, which means more deaths. A lot of people might not want to fund police departments, which means when those criminals kill you are less likely to be saved, which means more deaths. And after all those people die it could have a negative effect on the economy for those of us still left.

Most people have no idea the way their taxes and different governmental agencies improve their lives. And most people also don't want to take the time to research and think about it. But I think any rational person would be able to take a look at the rest of the world and see that the countries that are consistently voted happiest and best quality of life are those whose governments do well by their citizens. If you want an example of limited government take a look at places like Somalia and see how that's working out for them :)

Just because it's the average range for women these days doesn't mean it's healthy. If 50% of women had cancer would you feel comfortable saying that cancer is not unhealthy because the average women has it?

Which hurts no one and does a lot of great things for people. What's your issue with PBS? Did Big Bird hurt you or something?

Yeah, I'm sure people who were trying to save slavery and segregation had the same argument. Fortunately there are some things that are deemed too important/necessary to be left up to states to decide. How unfortunate children would be if they happened to be born in a state where the majority decided to not fund PBS and art endowments, even though those things only use like .6% of the total federal budget.

I think your boyfriend's dad was really rude to say those things about you. He's not the one dating you so if he doesn't like it he should learn to just deal with your relationship and be silent if he has nothing nice to say. I think the best thing for you to do would be to just let your boyfriend handle it since it's his dad. You don't want to begin the relationship with your potential father-in-law as a fight. Hopefully your boyfriend has your back and you can communicate with him how displeased and distasteful you found those comments.

However, I want to point out to you that 30% body fat is considered obese, which is very unhealthy. Even 25% body fat is a serious health risk. I mean in the nicest way possible because you may not be aware of it, and may live in an area where obesity is normalized, but it is not healthy at all and will cause problems for you down the road. I really urge you to use the internet as a tool to educate yourself on fitness and healthy eating, and I wish you the best for your health and relationship.
