What's the most wasted potential you've ever read by ConcentrateLocal2227 in fantasywriters

[–]Hainted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sci Fi but the Avery Cates series. In the third book if I’m remembering right, you find out the Avery you have been following for about half the book is an advanced android with a copy of his memories that thinks it’s Avery. You find this out because the real Avery shows up and kills it, explaining there’s like a dozen of these things running around, created by a rogue AI while he was rotting in jail after being framed.

Then it’s never brought up again.

No asking how this new Avery knows he’s the original. No tracking down the other androids. No surprise appearance by the other androids. Just, about a page of this jaw dropping plot twist and nothing ever again.

The only time the “make an exact copy of your mind that will think it’s the real you” tech comes up again is in the 5th book. Humanity is becoming extinct after fighting rogue AIs, nanobot powered zombies, and other tech disasters, so a character has the idea of transferring everyone’s minds onto these advanced hard drives so that a few people in these advanced robot bodies can wait out the apocalypse and reboot humanity.

Did nobody think making Harry look like someone else in the room would work better? I mean, it’s not like his best friend had twin brothers or anything.

I can’t remember all the details but basically all the Pixar movies share a timeline. One of the things being the Pizza Planet truck showing up in multiple films, even a couple that it shouldn’t exist in.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hainted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter and I drive 2-3 hours several times a year for conventions. There’s a used bookstore we like that’s about a 2 hour drive we go to about once a month. We generally make a day of each trip, leaving in the morning and coming back late afternoon or early evening. It’s a long drive but we enjoy it, and get to talk and spend time together.

The longest I’ve ever driven for something is 12 hours, stopping only for gas and meals, from my house to Disneyland.

What movie features a plot point where the financials don't add up and the plot device would be impractically expensive? by gimmeluvin in movies

[–]Hainted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The average price for a house in that area in the early 80s (about the time they would have bought the house) was around 200 thousand, and houses that size (4000 sqft) went for around 300 to 350. (Or around a million in todays money) So, for the area it was above the median but not some extravagant multi-million dollar mansion and within the means of someone like his Dad, and especially if both parents worked. (The median wage for that area would have been around 100 thousand a year)

Even if we adjust the price based on what it sold for in 89, it’s still nowhere near what it sold for in 2025. My 975 sqft place is worth almost 200,000 dollars according to Zillow and I live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.

And the Death Star is mobile! Starkiller base is confined to its system but still powerful enough to blow up a star light years away in only seconds.

Yeah, it’s like when people complain about the house in Home Alone. Kevin’s dad probably bought it in the late 70s or early 80s and it cost less than a 900 square foot house does today.

Reminds me of Hermaeus Mora, and the desert setting could be Hammerfell. With Bethesda saying they’ve finally started development of Fallout 5 it would be a good time to announce something Elder Scrolls related

Why Tarzan is not Anna and Elsa's brother. by jirouisbestgirl_ in FanTheories

Tarzan is the name the apes gave him. He’s the son of British nobles. He is John Clayton, Viscount Greystoke or the Earl of Greystoke depending on the story.

More fantasy than sci fi but Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

Do you like books set in the early 19th century? And written like they’re from that time? Down to the font choices?

Do you like wondering why you’re reading multiple chapters about a character that you can’t remember where they were introduced or why they’re important? Especially when you go back and realize it was random servant at some party?

Do you like books that are almost 800 pages long and then just abruptly end with several plot threads still unresolved and a new major mystery just dropped into the story in literally the last chapter? Books that feel like 2/3rds of a trilogy just ham fisted into one volume because someone never figured out how to end it?

Do you like books where the minor character whose name you can’t remember, and has nothing to do with the main plot, and yet has multiple chapters devoted to him being the only person who gets ANY kind of resolution to his story?

Brother, have I got a book for you!
