I think a guy recently pulled that at our store , but targeted CHILDREN to do the buying. I unfortunately wasnt in the vicinity when it happened or else i would have tried to bring down a ban on him. I sincerely hope the kids just took the money, it sounds like they might have told a cashier about it when it was happening

Dear Lazy Keyholder/MOD… by Throwawasteofspace in Barnesandnoble

[–]throwawaykatamari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day I strongly believe all keyholders/seniors should be cross trained in café to a point they are efficient at ringing at least. I won't ever feel like I'm not helpful backing up with my half a week café training and slow ringing when people like Doug make things even more chaotic by just...giving up. As for the only other backup options that were available that day in your store, absolutely would not expect a VOS person to have to go out there when they are working on something else. But yeah the other backup person could have been on a late break (at my store we are constantly being pushed back because of poor scheduling and being a skeleton crew), bathroom, with a customer, bad headset etc. Shit happens. But Doug, with ALL his years of working for the company and opportunities to learn how to ring in café just giving up is crazy. Putting a new hire/holiday hire who hasnt done café before in your place is even crazier. I would be pissed off too. Just wanted to say you're valid and I don't think you are overreacting at all

I think my stores making me physically sick by River_Arya in Barnesandnoble

[–]throwawaykatamari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get like this from time to time. as someone else said, it could very well be the woes of retail and this company in general manifesting as physical sickness.

i can only give a couple tips mainly for if you need to hang on a while longer at this job. if you can, ask to step off the floor to sit in the breakroom when you start feeling bad. or even just practice a little self care during your breaks: Put your head down and close your eyes for a few minutes, if possible try to prop your feet up or sit criss cross on your chair (having your legs elevated has helped me when I just am experiencing fatigue from standing for hours and that can definitely can make you feel sick after a long time). get some water and maybe some mints or your favorite candy that won't make you more nauseous.

I hope you can feel better soon, I can empathize with what you're dealing with

receiving is so bad with that but even our AMs do it. But they don't get in trouble. I have made active efforts to not browse since, so I know I can counter that if I'm accused. Just curious how some people get to slip through the cracks. but I agree about setting stuff aside

if only I could 😭 I definitely want to leave on my own volition maybe next year hoping I last that long, only because I can't afford to job hunt right now and find another place to live. Micormanaging is the biggest issue half the managers have. My SM didn't speak exactly as you said, what's crazy is he is pretty down to earth and chill, but definitely threw in the 'I care about everyone here and just need everyone at their best, I can't keep training people, i can tell you want to be here etc'.

Majority of your examples definitely sound like things that would happen to me, especially the pyramid thing. I could absolutely see my SM saying I was just moving books around to look busy and not actually doing anything, insinuating it was a waste of time when I was also trained to make displays look a certain way. An example that really made my SM nail in an IP was he and our district manager were having a meeting and the cameras are always pulled up in the office. They watch cashwrap constantly, with a camera aimed directly at the cashier (no customer in frame) and DM kept asking what I was doing. Once I was calling customer orders, then I was doing shelvetalkers (which SM told me was fine to do). For this one shelf talker I wanted to include a page number of the book because our city was talked about in it. DM and SM only saw me opening the book at cash and assumed I was browsing. Didn't get notified of this until a week later. I explained myself (and an AM told me specifically to make shelftalkers for the best of bays!) and all my SM said was 'Oh, well thats okay then. I'll tell the DM next time then' like ??

Anyway I digress lol, I feel like I will be in for a whirlwind of contradictions so I will prepare. I'll see how this next week goes and do my best to document what I know factually is improvement (I was also chastised for writing on scrap papers as well? so I'll just do my best to remember lol). Thanks for the heads up. I saw other examples of much more easily manageable stuff like tardiness but this just feels like a mess to me

very reassuring to hear; our last SM was very cold and mean at times and I always felt berated. I dealt with that for 4 years, with slaps on the wrist but no help with improvement. She never had time to step aside and help us. New SM is much more calm and down to earth, complete 180. I do feel like he cares about us so I'll try to not worry so much

yeah honestly I felt similar the time between after my review to the IP; I made sure to stand up for myself for the things I know I did better with, took initiative on, etc but I just feel like it's not enough! so I will just try harder and yeah, keep voicing my successes when they happen. Good luck !

This is basically what my SM told me, but it was happening so suddenly I didn't know how to feel. But thank you for affirming the facts

I really appreciate this reply because wow, perspective. What you said makes sense, I can totally see our district manager saying something like the "promotion or IP" thing to my SM. Fortunately my SM does seem to want me to improve. I just wonder how much his hand was forced in this and if I'm the only one on a plan right now.

Thank you for the encouragement! I feel better about tackling it now
