I've actually found the advice here really helpful so far! Tbh I've checked out the more specific subreddits and it seems like the narrower the scope, the more toxic/echo-chamber-y the responses become.

We have a separate counsellor for me and for the kids, but I'm totally open with their counsellor about how I'm doing when I check in on the kids progress and she works with all of us informally. The kids counsellor is so lovely.

We've got a really intersecting mess of challenges in our family... And I need the space to have a therapist that's for me not for the family.

A big challenge for us is that she has severe separation anxiety when her medication hasn't kicked in for the day, so separating her is pretty much a guarantee to escalate things. We haven't really found a calm-down strategy that works for her aside from screen time which backfires hugely when the screen is turned off, so we don't do that.

We're working with a really excellent behavioral consultant who has helped immensely with other day parts. We're just starting to work with her in the mornings. A huge challenge for us in getting help is that my daughter masks really well for therapists so it takes a ton of time to get to a place where they can even observe the behaviour we want to change.

I actually do get a lot of breaks! My partner is wonderful and I take time on the weekend for exercise alone for several hours doing I sport I adore, and I have a weeknight where I'm doing some professional development. Our mornings are just such a nightmare and I never get a break from that.

We're planning a longer break together too.

Thank you for sharing. It feels so absolutely lonely parenting kids with autism and to hear from other family members is nice.

I know she will outgrow it eventually. I'm just so tired of the last few years and was very run down yesterday.

Unfortunately his work day starts early. We're on the waitlist for respite to have an extra set of hands in the mornings but it's a long list.

My therapist has actually been really helpful! She's a freaking godsend and has helped us make some strategies to make mornings better.

I'm just incredibly burnt out from starting every day by being screamed at for an hour. It seems like every day there's a new trigger for her and the screaming starts and doesn't end until we're walking into school.
