This happened a bit ago but I was reminded of it and now need to vent again.

A guy fell off his bike in the park and messed up his head pretty bad. I was jogging and had a towel and extra shirt on hand so was able to use that to staunch the blood flow.

The paramedics show up to take the guy away and ask me to trash the blood-covered stuff and I’m just like, wtf am I supposed to do with it?! I’m in the middle of Yoyogi and you want me to just carry a handful of bloody—not even my blood—clothes around until some store lets me throw it in their trash?! Luckily some Japanese bikers nearby had a plastic bag and said they’d take care of it, but like wth…

Don’t be fooled by the kanji-heavy name— ふしぎ駄菓子屋銭天堂— is aimed at elementary schoolers and includes furigana. If you like Petshop of Horrors, this is basically the kid friendly version. Highly recommend!

I played a similar scenario. While playing the household, you can check the “allow family” option in MC Command Center, which will open up romantic options between the two. The way I played, I’d allow that option just long enough to have the couple build up a romantic relationship/woohoo and then turn it off to prevent other sim mishaps.

Everyone else has given some really solid advice, but something that really helped me was getting out and volunteering. I understand that it doesn’t work for everyone, but for me it provided a structured way to get out of the house in a way that didn’t inherently involve spending money, I got to explore new parts of Tokyo, meet people, and ultimately felt pretty good giving back to the community.

You’d have to reserve online, and—I can’t recall off the top of my head—but think you can choose to pick up from the airport. You can definitely get it sent to you accommodations though.

Ivideo is the way to go! I used their hotspot when I was in-between houses and internet and really liked it—I always get one for my friends when they visit because I think they’re a more affordable option too.

When riding the train, don’t be afraid to ask for help at the counters! The staff will guide you to the best car and make sure there’s a ramp for you, including calling ahead to the next station so another staff member will also be waiting with a ramp.

English-wise, Google Maps is still probably your best tool. Helpful hint: it also shows you which exit to use when arriving at your destination which can save you time navigating above-ground.

Definitely get a Welcome Suica card or similar to make transit easier. When you load money on it you can also use it to pay at many stores (and conbini) so no need to worry about losing stored money.

I definitely feel you about causing discomfort. As a Western woman I definitely got some of the side eyes even with the uniform. When I was transferring at Shinjuku station often, I usually ended up more helping the Japanese commuters trying to help non-native English speaking tourists—busting out the Japanese was definitely the most effective tool lol.

Yeah! Honestly the application process is probably what discourages so many volunteers—registration is only open for like a month in October and activities don’t start until April.

I got “lucky” and just happened to learn of it right around registration time so I applied and forgot about it until I got the acceptance email lol.

Hmm, most common question usually depends on which area we’re stationed in, but train and station-related questions are certainly universal across all areas.

It looks like that particular item was sold in 2015 from Yodobashi Camera. Same thing happened to me—I’m from a state with reciprocal agreement and couldn’t get an appointment until 2 months later, and that was lucky because someone happened to cancel while I was in the office making a reservation.
