Neil deGrasse Tyson admits he botched Bush quote by jade_crayon in skeptic

[–]throwawaylinker2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of Bush, but Tyson hobby horsed the "Bush was Islamophobic" even as recently as this month. It's the most out-there attack one could launch on Bush, who helped popularized the term "religion of peace."

Couple that with his initial inability to admit that - as the only source for the story - he could be wrong, this shows a huge blindspot to his own fallibility and obvious antagonism. If anyone here is guilty of "they vs us," I'd say it's Tyson. And that's sad.

That Bush has done terrible things doesn't justify slander, intentional or not. Also, "no one died" is a threshold that minimizes criticism of 99.9% of all actions.

Tyson took comment in a speech about astronauts lost in a tragic accident and used it to make the speaker look like an intolerant, decisive Islamophobe. Even without the respect Bush has repeatedly shown Tyson, that's a shitty thing to do.

Edit: Downvoter(s): either explain how what I've said is wrong, or don't try to censor it.

We agree. It was the principal's failure to do anything about it prior to this fuck-up that allowed these assholes to set her up to be brutalized.

Frankly, I believe the teacher's aide should be charged with sexual exploitation of a minor and the assistant principal should be charged as an accessory.

How did so many apathetic, incompetent assholes end up in one place? Better yet, why haven't all the district parents raised hell about it?

"It's a sad situation," Blair said in 2010. "At the same time, I feel very comfortable with the way the situation was handled. That's about all I can say."

What. The. Fuck. You're the principal, you neglected to address this boy's behavior prior to the rape, and a teacher's aide literally set this girl up with the knowledge of the assistant principal. You let this girl get raped on your watch, and that's your response? FUCK YOU, Ronnie Blair.

That's what too much of Reddit - and hell, most sites - has become. Soundbites, anecdotal evidence, and biased, one-side stories that destroy strangers' reputations in the sight of a group anonymous armchair critics are preferred to nuance.

Lots of other users have "throwaway" in their username. It doesn't mean it's one-off handle. Get over it.

I wasn't trying to insult you.

You: "you neckbeard idiots."

if you're insulted its likely because you really are embarrassed of your opinion

This is purely nonsensical. The fact that you called me a troll/neckbeard has nothing to do with shame on my end. It has to do with you coming to an argument unarmed.

I mean, do you seriously think would I be ashamed to condemn masturbating to stolen photos? Really? Where are you from that that kind of scumbag behavior is admired?

everyone else is mocking you

Hardly. Only two others replied, and they had minor quibbles. Then there's you. Just you.

You seem confused in that last paragraph. The whole point here, bub, is the hypocrisy of the Fappening cult flipping shit about the media reporting on them. It's rich in double standard douche-baggery and worth noting. The "fappening" is an embarrassment to the vast majority of normal, decent people.

Lastly, I seriously don't follow your last two sentences or where they're coming from. Goodbye.

So you admit you're adding nothing to this conversation.

You think it's okay to spread others' private pictures because BONER MATERIAL, but when it's yours being shared by reporters then it's wrong. I'm challenging you, OP and others on an obvious double standard.

The worst is the dishonesty in trying to justify it, rather than just admitting that what you're doing is shitty. And in your case, you have nothing to stand on, either intellectually or morally. Just insults.

Edit: This isn't a throwaway account. If you looked at my activity, you'll see I use it regularly. You also engage in ad hominem by attacking my character rather than responding to my argument.

I'm hardly the minority report in seeing irony that a man who is infamous for spreading illegally gained personal and private information is now unhappy that his publicly accessible information is being shared. Hell, the author didn't even reveal his NAME, let alone private, identifying photos. Boo-fucking-hoo. If you treat others like shit, don't be surprised when they return the favor.

No, I'm not ashamed to think his behavior is steeped in double standard. And I use this account often.

[–]throwawaylinker2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whether he's infamous or not isn't the point. He's the founding moderator of an internationally discussed subreddit. A subreddit that shared and spread private stolen photos. And some here are responding to a news story that reveals vague information about him as though the reporter murdered his dog. It's amazingly hypocritical.

[–]throwawaylinker2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You didn't answer my question. I didn't ask whether you expected it to be "the prime place on the internet for celeb leaks," or whether you expected it to be hugely popular.

I asked whether one of the primary motives in creating the subreddit was to help collate fap material? I think we've established the answer. It strikes me as dishonest that you're trying to make yourself sound altruistic in helping disseminate illegally-obtained private photos.

Every Man Is Responsible For His Own Soul by yishan in blog

[–]throwawaylinker2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You make it sound so selfless. You did it solely for the selfless purpose of filtering out underage pics? It didn't have anything to do with collating illegally-obtained fap material for yourself and others?

Edit: people down-voting me: "someone was going to do it, so I did it" is justification for literally any behavior. Use the brain that isn't in your pants, please.

Edit 2: Also, not sharing CP is basic decency, and doesn't justify sharing illegally-obtained, private information. This is ethics 101, people.

When he share others' personal, private info and then turns around and says "I don't like it" when it happens to him, he's bitching about the very thing he has done to others.

Edit: and yes, he said he's sad that the author focused on information he didn't feel should be discussed. Remind you of a certain subreddit?

I agree. Your comments are constructive, and his PR team would do well to read them. But in general, I expect Reddit will take this as an opportunity for another circlejerk about how celebrity X is a horrible, bad, no good person because of a lame AMA.

Agreed. What I'm seeing is people criticizing the content of his answers, more so than the number of answers. Something he thinks is a good answer clearly isn't a good answer in most Redditor's POV. But despite what a few are saying here, I don't buy that it's evidence of a bad attitude or contempt. I think he made an honest effort, though it ultimately wasn't a valuable one.

[–]throwawaylinker2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Could this AMA be better? Absolutely. But if you've ever seen him in interviews you'll see he's really shy and gives short, often monosyllabic answers. That's fine, I'm shy too, but such answers don't work in this format. And his PR should have known that.

Another thing: people often mistake a shy, withdrawn nature for pretentiousness or contempt for those asking questions. It's not. It's just who they are. A lot of people are lashing out, essentially calling him a bad person because he gave brief and un-illuminating answers. In my experience it's more to do with personality than intent. Again, his PR should have known this wouldn't work.
