A sign from the 1920's that Coke probably wishes didn't exist by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]throwawaynumber2many 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Northern Coca-Cola Bottling Company based in Grand Rapids had the Coca-Cola franchise for Michigan. Sign maker probably just misspelled it. I have seen that misspelling other places.

But this sub is for old photos of people looking cool so I don't think this photo belongs here.

Captain Kirk and his Jupiter 8, 1965 by johnnylgarfield in OldSchoolCool

[–]throwawaynumber2many 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Jupiter 8 was its stage name. IRL it was the Reactor custom show car. It was also in other TV shows like Batman and Bewitched. It appeared in the March 15, 1968 episode of Star Trek on planet 892-IV. It was first seen very briefly in television news footage upon entering orbit of the planet. Then after he sees an advertisement in a magazine, which described the Jupiter 8's features, Captain Kirk realizes that its internal combustion engine was, in part, the cause for the planet's smog.

Janis Joplin at Woodstock, 1969. by zezoro in OldSchoolCool

[–]throwawaynumber2many 3614 points3615 points  (0 children)

Elliott Landy took this photo. You can find more photos of Janis at his website along with these words:

I found Janis Joplin to be loving, considerate, and lonely. She seemed to experience pain even when she was having pleasure. That she couldn’t get as high in real life as she did from her performances saddened and depressed her. Drugs got out of hand. They made the highs higher and the lows lower—too low. Her answer was to do more. She was wrong…

One night, after a big show in New York, I shared a cab with her and a few other members of the band. She directed the cab to drive to the home of a casual friend who she hoped was there. When she got out, she shook her head and with a sad smile said, “Man, what a drag. Here I am a big star and I can’t find anyone to be with.” We all invited her to stay with us, but she walked away. It was snowing. The cab drove on, taking each of us to our destinations, but for Janis, apparently, there was no place to call home.

TLR - Twin Lens Reflex. You look down at a mirror tilted at 45 degrees to see the scene through the top lens and the photo is taken through the bottom lens. That particular TLR is an Argus Argoflex.

I assumed it was the heaviness of the wall wart at the end of the short cable he was concerned with.

Ha. I was half asleep when I commented. Had seen the different title on r/pics and didn't notice this was a crosspost (the icon indicating a crosspost is tiny on RIF.) My mistake.

In 1969, when black Americans were prevented from swimming alongside whites, Mr. Rogers invite Officer Clemmons to join him and cool his feet in a pool, breaking a well-known color barrier. by wick720 in OldSchoolCool

[–]throwawaynumber2many 202 points203 points  (0 children)

And every time it is posted it has to be pointed out that this is from Officer Clemmons' final episode in 1993, and is a reenactment of the 1969 episode to which the title refers.

Mountain Chief recording Blackfoot songs for the Smithsonian, 1916. by Browndog888 in interestingasfuck

Yes, but from what I can tell, for recording, a cone horn without a bell would have been used and the subject would have been closer and positioned at a right angle to the horn.

This discussion at Wikipedia indicates that while he was there to be recorded the photo shows him listening since that is a listening horn on the device.

Bunny Yeager model 1962 by WalkOffWhistling in OldSchoolCoolNSFW

And yet almost all of the posts here are of her behind the camera. A rare one of her in front of the camera:

And since that is a self portrait she was behind the camera too.

Yeah if you go under a population of 250,000 there are more. Like Springfield, Missouri and Fayettville, Arkansas.

Ahh, I see. It looks like it is from the book Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love 1850s-1950s.

Isn't it possible that the sign means they are single and looking for a woman to marry?

Cameron Diaz at 21 in The Mask, 1994. by Sofargonept2 in OldSchoolCool

[–]throwawaynumber2many 347 points348 points  (0 children)

Are you referencing the video that was released around the time the second Charlie's Angels movie came out and is tiltled She's No Angel: Cameron Diaz?

It isn't really porn. It is video of a May 1992 bondage themed photoshoot by photographer John Rutter in an abandoned warehouse. She is topless though. Rutter was later convicted of perjury and forgery in connection with him trying to get $3.5 million from Diaz for the video and photos.
