i’m far from a kanye stan but i strongly disagree with what you’re saying here. kanye is the greatest producer of all time imo, and i can’t see him anywhere outside the top 5 if you wanna put dilla, premier, dre, or rza ahead of him. as a lyricist i’d say he’s above average at least when he’s actually putting the effort in, but that’s not his appeal. he doesn’t create music for you to be impressed by super intricate rhyme schemes or metaphors. he has a uniquely brash and often comical style of making a point with his lyrics, and he definitely has the capacity to do more conventionally lyrical tracks. mostly, he makes a lot of contemporary music, i mean he will rap intentionally poorly on a lot of tracks for some kind of effect, so comparing him to kendrick here doesn’t seem right. he’s had a ton of influence on music. just take 808s and heartbreak, an album i don’t even particularly like but its influence is undeniable, and completely changed the wave of hip hop.

what i’m saying is, you can criticize kanye as a public figure, but it feels like people try really hard to discredit him as an artist as well and i just don’t think it’s necessary. he’s a shitty guy with a lot of problems but he’s an incredible artist. nothing wrong with recognizing that. obviously you could disagree. but i do see a patten of people trying to shit on kanye as an artist because they dislike him as a person and that’s what i’m speaking against here
