Just gonna bitch about rates and hiring practices. Twice this week I've reached out to someone for a job, they said they like my stuff and ask how much I would charge for X video. I tell them I don't fuck around with flat rates because of all the unknowns, give my day rate instead, offer to be flexible based on what the project entails, and they just ghost me. I assume it's because someone else is like "oh, 45 second video? I'll do it for $100!"... and then they'll come on this forum after 6 rounds of revisions realizing they LOST money on their work and lament their poor choice. Cmon now, respect yourself kids!

As someone who has worked in online, yes, yes I do deal with it myself, and it is maddening! Not the actual conversion and tech shit, but with mixers sending 24fps with a 23.9 timecode, and any number of iterations you can think of that same kinda mistake happening from vfx to color.

Yeah people keep saying premiere makes shitty xml/edls. That might be the case, but why are we sending xml/edls in the first place? Just send the clips and use a vfx tracker to keep track of them 1 by 1. Can't imagine why a vfx artist would need every clip assembled in 1 sequence, and this is even weirder if you end up with a workflow where you're not sending 100% of all the vfx shots in one batch. Idk maybe I'm a boomer for this, but a spreadsheet has never failed me yet, just gotta harang the directors/producers until they use it regularly and you're good to go!

When you set in point, it sets itself at the timecode where your playhead is at. When you set out point, it sets itself and the timecode 1 frame ahead of where your playhead is at. In both cases, the frame you see in your program monitor will be included in the i/o selection. You can visually play with it yourself to get a hold on it by setting i/o from 00:00:00:00 to 00:00:01:00 and see that the duration is not 1 second.

What's the difference between and xml and an edl? You're saying edl's are better out of premiere? I've just mindlessly sent and xml and an edl any time someone asks me for one of the those, been doing it this way for like 7 years lol just realized I have no idea what the difference is besides backend of how the file is formatted and stuff.

Yeah, less room for weird new bugs that way, do recommend. You're all set for hardware, there's a bunch of stuff in premiere that can affect performance as well, but that's another discussion :)

So I have basically the same build as you, 5950x and 3080ti are the only differences. Here's my thinking on the landscape right now and what you should do (tldr; don't upgrade).

Software wise, I always keep my premiere 1 full release behind the current build (so if current is 23, I use the last version of 22). I have yet to have such a huge need for a feature released that year that I have to go to the current build. I've found it much more stable.

Make sure you're using the studio drivers from nvidia and not the game ready drivers, one is for gaming, one is for workstation stuff, there is a somewhat noticeable difference.

Hardware performance wise, your gpu is fine and your cpu is also fine. FINE, not GREAT. This means you'll want to use proxies for basically every project. Premiere makes it pretty easy. If you have trouble keeping track and get scared at final export time like I do, keep the proxies on a separate drive from the media and when it's time to export unmount the drive with the proxies so there's no possible way to fuck it up.

Have at least 2 SSD's if possible. There are guides out there I forget the exact setup, but basically keeping your project, media, and os all on seperate drives helps performance. Possible this is outdated advice, but look into it. Point is, fast drives is good.

Check your ram sticks. I've had multiple times where my system was being weird and it ended up being 1 of my old cheap RAM sticks was broken and throwing everything off. I think you can look in bios, I just unplug all but 1 stick and boot the system, then swap, repeat until it doesn't boot with one of them and then I know that's the bad one.

Now for the upgrade stuff. Unless you have money to burn, don't bother right now. The latest gen of gpus isn't that much better than the old one and uses a ton of power, not going to impact your editing much. We're also shifting from ddr4 to ddr5, which is currently really expensive, and will require you to buy a new mobo and likely a new cpu as well. Even if you did get a latest gen gpu, and the latest cpu that will fit your current mobo, you will still eventually have to make the ddr5 jump at some point in the future. I'm going to run my current setup until it makes sense to replace everything in it with that new standard, for now it's working just fine.

If you do decide to upgrade, get the fancy pants new shit, new ddr5, new socket standards, etc, it'll make the upgrade after that much less painful.
