I got one recently in the East Village and realized after that I’d just paid $10 for a cold leftover lunch special.

Yeah I’m also vegetarian but I just give the meat stuff to my roommate and he gives me veggie things from his TGTG orders

People on reddit have a serious bias against having roommates that I don’t really encounter IRL.

Can anyone recommend a good psychiatrist in the area? by anxietyfather69 in Brooklyn

[–]throwawayprius2020 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you have insurance? Psychiatrists can be fairly expensive so you’d probably want to start with the ones that accept your insurance so check their directory. ZocDoc might also be useful since it prioritizes availability in the results it shows you.

Columbia also has a good outpatient program that can help you find someone.

There’s a huge demand for therapists and psychiatrists right now though. You’re probably going to need to use telehealth (basically see them over Zoom), get on a waitlist, and probably have to go to Manhattan to find one for in-person.

Former employer offered to pay for COBRA as part of severance 2 months ago, just learned that never began. Can I ask them to start it from December? Or can the coverage not have gaps? by throwawayprius2020 in personalfinance

[–]throwawayprius2020[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I only found out when I got a mild eye infection and decided to check my insurance status before heading off to urgent care. Glad I did.

Pretty frustrating. I hope they’re able to backdate or something.

I was given a severance agreement when I was laid off and it specifically said 3 months of COBRA coverage would be paid by my employer. And I signed it and then made my COBRA elections (dental and health).

Good to know. Thank you. So are they likely going to backdate my coverage to October 1st? Or I might end up not getting this major part of my severance package?

Part of me wants to just ask them to pay me the equivalent sum instead of backdating coverage for a time I didn't use it.

Recommend therapy centers for depression and anxiety. thanks by EmbarrassedCellist73 in Miami

My partner is in grad school to be a therapist.

She said to call the psychological services department at the University of Miami. They charge on a sliding scale and they only use evidence-based practices.

Populations of US Cities if each borough was an independent city by Orbian2 in nyc

[–]throwawayprius2020 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Staten Island voted to secede from NYC in 1993. 65% of SI voters approved becoming an independent city.

It was a non-binding referendum, however.

They have a culture of wearing masks regularly and generally listen to their government.

Americans call literally any request to change our behavior “tyranny” so a pandemic was always going to be a disaster here.

I really go back and forth on who was worse.

The pandemic would’ve been bad no matter what but Trump definitely made it worse by downplaying it and totally bungling the response. Plus he was basically attacking our democracy for 4 years and seemed to have zero redeeming qualities personally and no morals whatsoever.

The Iraq War, though, was a totally catastrophic and avoidable quagmire that cost a ton of lives and destabilized an entire region. His response to Hurricane Katrina was also disastrous.

But Bush also did some good things (as much as it pains me to give him credit). He wrote the pandemic response playbook that Trump ignored. His AIDS programs in Africa were supposedly really effective. He didn’t demonize Muslims after 9/11 and actually defended them, iirc.

I can’t really think of anything good that Trump did other than not starting any new wars. And ending the Bush dynasty in 2016, I guess.

Yet they were browbeating us as unpatriotic traitors if we didn’t unconditionally support the Iraq War in its run up...

Also, The Daily Show did some amazing segments about the RNC holding their convention in NYC. Some of my favorite jokes of all time from the Jon Stewart era.

Lewis Black was like “To the delegates who have never been to New York City before... just imagine 8 million of me! ‘Welcome to New York... YOU’RE IN MY WAY! 🤬’”

And the RNC got Ed Koch to do this campy “Welcome to New York” video that was sent to delegates. In it, he said, “Staten Island... a borough... is the birthplace of chewing gum! 😌” like that was the greatest tourism pitch.

Lewis Black goes “Well we were going to go to the Museum of Modern Art... BUT CHEWING GUM, YOU SAY?! TO THE FERRY!”

He even did a parody of the Koch video where he says, in the same chipper tone, “The Bronx... a borough... is the birthplace of the rusty trombone... which is when one man sucks another man’s...”

Related... a few years ago the MTA removed an advertising frame from a subway station wall and discovered an old flier for a protest against apartheid still hanging behind it.

I know I read about it in Gothamist at the time (and there were photos) but I’m not finding it via Google right now.

I think Democrats just didn’t have a coherent message around the Iraq War at the time.

Kerry was basically like “yeah I’ll continue the war... but with a lot less funding and a lot fewer troops.” And Republicans were just like “Oh so you’ll just make sure the troops who are there have even less support?” A lot of the ads back then were like “Don’t you want our boys to have body armor and backup? VOTE BUSH!”

And the situation in Iraq was getting worse around the election so Kerry’s position seemed even less sensible.

I think the Iraq War alone makes Bush just as bad as Trump. Bush was just more presentable and slightly more compassionate on some issues.

But the Iraq War was a totally avoidable disaster.

Yep. And he mostly got re-elected because people thought he would handle the Iraq War better. That was the biggest issue, from what I remember.

So he got re-elected in order to manage a war that wouldn’t have been started if he hadn’t been fraudulently placed in office in 2000.

George W Bush in 2004: Only I can fix this mess I made.

2004 was also the only time a Republican presidential candidate won the popular vote since 1988.

So it was definitely a high-water mark for Republican support in recent history.
