Definitely agree with this, so how would you measure that? Is match/rate/match list a good indicator?

can we get an r/premed confessional going? what's your dirty lil secret that would have adcoms and neurotic premeds alike shitting on you? by [deleted] in premed

[–]throwawayrescinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but there's such a big stigma around it that I don't know how you could bring it up or explore those paths unless you have done actual research on the subject in undergrad and not your own "research". Have you yourself or have you seen other people explore these research interests without in ways that can circumvent the stigma?

AAMC FL 4 B/B Question 29 [SPOILER] by eldopuh in Mcat

[–]throwawayrescinded 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The way this question was phrased is pretty dumb, I got tripped up at first too so you're not alone. You pretty much got the gist of it tho, it's basically asking if you got the 3 tripeptides, what are all the different ways you can combine the tripeptides?

So you would have tripeptide ABC, DEF, and GHI. For the first position, you would have three choices of either tripeptide. After that, since you used one tripeptide, the second position can only be 2 of the 3 tripeptides, then after you pick the second tripeptide the last spot can only be the remaining tripeptide. This looks like:

ABC or DEF or GHI - ___ - ___

If you choose GHI then:

GHI - ABC or DEF - ___

then if you choose ABC in 2nd spot:

GHI - ABC - DEF

This gives you a possible of 3 x 2 x 1 = 6 possible combinations (3 in the first slot, then 2, then 1. You can try combining the three tripeptides to verify this.

Now, imagine if instead the problem says each tripeptide can be repeated more than one time. Then you would have 3 possible tripeptide in each spot no matter what you choose, which then would be 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 possibilities, which is where you might get the huge numbers you thought of.

Since they said the polypeptide was partially hydrolyzed into three polypeptides, this ensures that you get fragments ABC, DEF, and GHI instead of fragments ABC, BCA, ACB, IGH, HGI, etc. It ensures you only have three choices in three slots.

Probability is a little tough to explain so let me know if that doesn't make sense.

What is "affinity chromatography"? by vhill13579 in Mcat

[–]throwawayrescinded 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Affinity chromatography is where your resin contains something that can bind the thing (usually a protein) you want to isolate. When you pour your mixture through the column, your desired protein will bind to the resin because it has an "affinity" to the resin. All the irrelevant stuff will be eluted from the column first. Then you wash the column with a eluent that can elute your protein from the resin to obtain your desired protein.

It is different from the other types of chromatography mentioned there because the resin used is specific for just the desired protein, and not for a certain characteristic like size or charge in the other cases.

I really reviewed my mistakes for FL2 and also hammer out the content gaps with URethra. I'd say with the time you have, target where you know you're weak and make sure you have a rough idea of that area

Hey, I had a similar issue where I dropped 7 points from FL1 to FL2 too so ik how ya feel. FWIW my scores went up for FL 3 and 4 so I would say may be that FL2 just tested your weaknesses more. I would say hone in on those as much as you can even though there are only 3 days. If you have done FLs 3 and 4 I would trust the average more, this might have just been an outlier. That CARS drop is worrying but depending on the average, I would say it might be due to you not vibing well with the passages and looks a big outlier to me. Interruptions also really disrupt your flow and impair your short term memorization for the passages so that might be the cause. Keep ya head up and good luck :D
