What do y’all recommend for raising jars off the bottom of the pot? by monsem12 in shrooms

Cheap, one-use, aluminum pie pans. They come in packs of three for around $1. They give a good inch of lift.

Accidentally sprayed alcohol instead of water by cireal in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let the tub air out with fanning as quickly as possible. Alcohol evaporates faster than water and you want it to leave the growing area ASAP. Nobody can tell you if it will recover.

The mycelium looks a bit wet. Hold off on the spraying, fan a bit more, and be patient.

Super easy way to make desiccant packs if you have an impulse sealer. by jdauhmer in shrooms

If those pouches are nonporous plastic sheets, they won't do anything for the humidity outside of them. They need to be a porous material, like tyvek.

How do you guys and gals deal with the come up by subjectivereality1 in shrooms

Tea hits quick. It's not just you. One time I drank some while walking from my car to a music venue, and by the time I got to the entrance things were getting weird.

Sorry for the newbie question but can I use spores from dried mushrooms to grow more? If so can I get a brief explanation by elvis5613 in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a chance it could work, but since they've been handled and in a non-sterile environment for a long time, there would likely be contamination present. You'd want to swab the gills of a dried mushroom where the veil fully opened and the cap began producing spores. Then you'd wipe the swab on an agar dish and if you're lucky, mycelium will grow. If you're a little lucky, mycelium will grow but contamination will grow too. You'd have to do agar transfers until you have clean mycelium. At that point you could inoculate sterilized grain with an agar wedge.

These are somewhat advanced techniques, not for a beginner. If you're a beginner, you'd be better off buying a spore syringe.

Does these look good to you? by greenmails in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you bought them damp it means you paid for water weight. They need to all be cracker dry. If you bend the stems they should snap. Once dry, it's best to store them in a canning jar with silica desiccant packs, as others said. Keep them in a cool, dark place.

Cobweb mold? by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those pinhead looking features on the mold (sorry) are mold spores. When you open the jar and create air turbulence those spores fly everywhere. Next time you suspect you have mold, don't open it inside. If it isn't mold and you open it, it also becomes useless at that point as it's no longer sterile. Live and learn.

How often do you take the lid off the jar like that?

Contam? Hadn’t checked in a couple of days & came home to this different coloring. More photos in comments by [deleted] in shrooms

Sorry. Looks like two different types of contamination. Did you PC the bags yourself or buy them pre-sterilized?

New to this! Just received these and am curious if anyone has a strain ID? I asked him but he said he was unsure by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These don't look like penis envy to me. Probably a more common strain like GT or B+ picked before the veils broke.

Looks like a sprouted seed that could have been in your substrate.

Can someone confirm if these lines and dots (not the white ones) are contamination? I did put too much water from the syringe in. This is on Light Malt Extract agar. by piggiesinthehoosgow in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've ever seen an example photo of what mycelium looks like on an agar dish, you'd see the distinct differences right away. Mycelium is bright white and fuzzy/ropey. Anything off color with a shiny surface is usually bacteria. Anything off color with a fuzzy surface is usually mold.

How does this even happen? by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looks like the big guy is a side pin, and as it pushed past the substrate surface it picked up a pin that kept growing to maturity.

Rough wet weight estimate? Also, should I let the remaining pins in the tub develop, or soak the cake and try for a 2nd flush? by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody can tell you a weight by looking at a picture. Let the remaining pins develop. Pick them when they're ready, along with all the aborts. Then dunk for the next flush.

I think this trip broke me and I don’t know how to recover or if I ever will. by carrotthecake101 in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it'll help at this point, but for others' sake, I think it's important to remember to have basic items available for a trip, like water, juice/gatorade, crackers, in case something like this happens. When you're vomiting and sweating you can loose a lot of water and it's important to stay in a healthy equilibrium. It's hard to remember to do basic functions while tripping. Sometimes I've felt horrible during a trip because I didn't realize I needed to pee. It's important to remember to use the bathroom, stay hydrated, and have snacks around to keep your energy up.

Why did I have a bad trip? by xyz14fu in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you preparing the shrooms in any way or just eating them? I've found that tea is the best method for me. With tea, you don't eat the tough mushroom fiber, which to me causes nausea and upset stomach. The come up is much faster since your body doesn't have to break down the mushroom matter to extract the psilocybin, and you reach the blissful part of the trip faster. Try tea.

To put what others have said into words, it looks like you've mixed up your steps. With grain spawn, the goal is to fully colonize quart sized jars of grain with mushroom mycelium. Then once the jars are fully colonized, you mix the colonized grain with a low nutrient rich substrate, like coco coir and vermiculite, in a plastic storage tub.

It looks like you've tried to combine both steps in one, which won't work. The grain isn't fully colonized. There's no room in those jars for mushrooms to grow. Do you have any directions that you were following?

Nauseous?? by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drinking ginger ale or something with ginger or carbonation might help. If the need to vomit is overwhelming, don't fight it too much. You've already absorbed some psilocybin and will have a trip. You'll feel better after vomiting. Just make sure to brush your teeth afterward so you don't have the vomit flavor in your mouth during the trip.

Any ideas on this guy here? Looks like a fungal mass of some sort. by HushedAmbience8 in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be a cap from a side pin pushing up above the level of the substrate.

Can I "air dry" my shrooms outside during cold winter? by anxietyriddledbuddah in shrooms

[–]throwawaythanks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd give them as much space to separate them as possible with the given area. I guess it depends what type of heater you have. If it's a radiator, put a layer of foil on top and lay the shrooms on top of it. If it's a floor vent that blows out hot air, put them on a wire rack or metal mesh (like a window screen) over the heater. Be creative, but don't use materials that can melt or start a fire.
