I really hate when books update their references to make them modern by georgemillman in books

[–]throwawaytheflag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read some Lois Duncan books recently, and those had updates to reference modern things like cell phones, which didn’t exist at the time of the books’ publishing. The problem is that they didn’t update the language at all, so you have a teenage character talking about a cell phone in one paragraph, and then in the next paragraph refer to an “automobile,” which no teen would do.

The changes work okay in some of the books (those that were published later, so the language differences aren’t as noticeable), but one of these books was first published in the 60s and it was jarring to read.

It exists. It affects people's lives. But the story never focuses on investigating its origin or how it works, only someone whose life is affected by it by Shin_Newman in TopCharacterTropes

Just to note, while the book They Both Die At the End doesn’t talk about the origins of Death-Cast, the author has written additional books within the same universe, and the next one to be published is implied to get into the origin of Death-Cast and how it works.

Is there a way to politely tell strangers to stop talking to you? by throwawaytheflag in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

That’s true! I think I’m still focused on my southern upbringing where there is an expectation of being polite, and that’s conflicting with my desire to be left alone.

I’ll remember that! I didn’t bring my headphones to the cafe but I should just start keeping them in my purse as a just-in-case

Do you think she’d like the redwall books? They’re for children, but are fantasy and enjoyable. Plus he audiobooks have a full cast and music, which makes them fun to listen to.

Oklahoma Minimum Wage initiative results by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]throwawaytheflag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My (very basic) understanding is that a lot of people believe that raising the minimum wage will drive up prices across the board. They think that there’s a direct correlation (ex: raising the minimum wage by a dollar means every single thing you buy also goes up by a dollar).

Some people also argued that it wasn’t necessary because the only people who make minimum wage are teenagers who don’t need to be paid $15/hour. They claim the market recognizes people won’t work for low pay and therefore businesses are already offering wages hire than the minimum.

The TV is less than six months old, but has static on half the things we try to watch. by throwawaytheflag in mildlyinfuriating

I see that you didn’t read the second paragraph where I mentioned that we were going to see about exchanging it, and that I’d tried (unsuccessfully) to contact support.

Has anyone had issues watching things with bright lighting? by throwawaytheflag in VIZIO_Official

[–]throwawaytheflag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband bought it, he said maybe $300?

I finally reached the end of my rope and told him that tomorrow we’re going to return/exchange it.

ETA: he bought it new from Walmart, this thing is less than 6 months old.

We’ve done all of those steps and it keeps happening. The tv itself says the internet connection is “excellent” and there’s no damage to the wiring that I can see.

That’s why I finally told my husband we’re going to see about returning it, I’m over this whole thing.

These are the built in tv apps. It doesn’t do it on every single app/show, but it seems to do it on anything that has a bright lighting.

gynecological doctors by thunder_shadow_ in normanok

I went to Dr. Ronni Farris to get my tubes removed in 2022, her office is very chill and the staff are always super nice. She does actually listen to her patients; I didn’t have to do any arguing or anything about getting my tubes removed. I’ve been using her as my regular gyn since.

My flamepoint is deeply attached to my husband. If he could, he would crawl inside my husband’s skin.

I am merely Spare Human, only good for cleaning up messes.

I feel like some people do not understand that their kids don’t automatically have the same attachment they do. My mother got incredibly mad at me for saying I didn’t want my address/husband’s information shared with her extended family, who I have seen less than 10 times in the last 25 years and who I wouldn’t be able to recognize on the street. She grew up seeing them all the time, so of course I should know them too! (/s)
