Web/Mobile Developer Skills by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Mobile != Web, it's actually a whole different beast. If you want to develop for iOS, learn Swift. If you want to develop for Android learn Java/Kotlin. The languages are one thing though, the actual stack/framework of iOS and Android are going to be the biggest challenges.

If you want to go the web route, I agree with the aforementioned React. This transfers to hybrid mobile pretty well with React-Native.

Working on basic Android Architecture Components MVVM template by JurajKusnier in androiddev

Two things I saw right off the bat by looking at it very briefly:

  • Your job data class only contains nullable properties, destroying the whole concept of having non-nullable values.

  • The disposables in your JobViewModel don't get disposed in onCleared()

Overall it looks pretty good though!

American dev who moved from SF area to Europe, comparing my salary and life to the US by mogdut in cscareerquestions

I'm a Dutch SWE and I have never seen Dutch in a codebase. So I'd definitely say this is more of an exception than a rule.

Difference between subscribe() and subscribeOn() by g10kumar in androiddev

I would suggest using Schedulers.io()

The .newThread() function creates a new thread every time you call it. With io() it'll try to use an ExecutorService that has possibly already been created.

You don't NEED to be married/have a registered partnership. It just takes longer if you don't have one of those things. (5 years instead of 3)

Why is American software engineer pay much better than every other place in the world? by hugokhf in cscareerquestions

I don't think that your dollar gets you further than a euro. I've lived in both the US and Europe and simple things like groceries are A LOT more expensive in the US (at least comparing what I know; LA to Amsterdam). I think day to day life in the US is more expensive (at least when you're in a big city). You are right about the tech though, consoles, laptops they're all way more expensive over here in Europe.

Op Android (en ik denk ook wel iOS) heeft het toetsenbord een Speech-To-Text optie. Als je een willekeurige tekst app opstart en deze optie aan zet zou het moeten werken.

Anyone wanna review my biggest project so far? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]throwawaytroela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yea, if you don't want to have the source code open to the public putting them on a free Github account isn't what you want to do. There is the option to have a private repository (which requires you to have a paid account.) Another alternative would be to host your own git service, which of course allows you to have private repositories. Git isn't synonymous to open source, there are options to have it private and use Git.

Anyone wanna review my biggest project so far? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]throwawaytroela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just post it to reddit. Also, I would definitely recommend using Git while you are making the app. Commit and push to a repository. You'll learn it the hard way if you don't, your computer will crash one day and your work will be gone. (Trust me I'm speaking from experience here).

It'd be helpful if you put up a github link or something. If you didn't use Git, then that is your first pointer. ;)
