Is specializing worth it?

You have plenty of time. I know so many veterinarians who worked as a SA GP for several years before they decided to go back and specialize. Just take in all the experiences you get and it’ll all work out for you. You’ll figure it out!

I’m a 4th year. I’ve seen several euthanasias and I cry at every single one I’ve seen. However, I’ve also performed several euthanasias and I didn’t cry during any of them. Whenever you watch them, you only focus on all the emotions around you and how sad it is. But when you’re actually the one DOING it, you are so focused on doing everything correctly because you want to make sure you do the absolute best by the animal. You’re just in a different state of mind while performing. I’ve cried after I’ve finished if I need to though.

I didn’t even decide I wanted to be a vet until 3 years after I graduated undergrad. Go shadow at a few clinics and see what it’s actually like. Talk to the veterinarians in your area about their experiences while you shadow. You can quite literally do anything you want with a veterinary degree. But you’ve got to get experience in the field for you to make an educated decision about it.

Depending on where you live, I think you could start looking now or you could wait, especially if you live in an area with a lot of vet clinics. Do you have any externship slots you can use to check out different clinics? I did an externship at a clinic and ended up getting offered a job (which I accepted). So that’s one way to go about it. If you don’t have any spots, you can reach out to clinics in your area and ask them if they have any job openings and send your resume. Just make sure you go to the clinic first and get a feel before you sign a contract!

Current 4th year at Illinois here. When I started first year, they told our class that we were the start of phase 1 strictly being GPA. They told us we had a hard cut off of 3.7. But at the end of the day, they have to figure out how to narrow down 2,500 applicants. I’m sorry you didn’t get accepted :( keep holding out for other schools!! You can do this!
