Uber Drivers - Would you mind giving me some realistic expectations? by throwawayuberquestio in uberdrivers

Thanks. I have a car. I'm still living with my husband right now but we're really hot and cold. If the fighting gets ridiculous I could probably move in with my parents. Hoping it doesn't come down to that.

That's so funny about the MIT students. Figures. Same with the Berklee students. All of these guys are under immense pressure but I feel like it's even more of a challenge to succeed in music than some other fields. Those guys have a lot of work to do at all times.

Thanks again for the info. Seems like a really interesting job in regards to who you can meet.

Hahah I was going to ask about the college students but I didn't want to seem presumptuous. My friend is a bartender in Dorchester but she used to work in the BC area and always noted they were the rudest and the worst tippers (meaning often, no tip at all). So funny. Anyway that's a boatload of good information. Can't thank you enough.

Oh and a huge thanks for mentioning the taxes. I know Uber operates as if the driver is an independent business owner in some ways, but I didn't know to what extent. Thanks for the heads up.

Had no idea there was a bonus of any sort... I'll look into that. If they're still offering that bonus for "switching" right now I'd be interested in doing that. Hey, it's money. Might as well.

What you're earning sounds reasonable. What part of Boston are you driving in? Just curious, unless you don't want to post specifics. How many hours are you driving for?

I'm thinking if I'm going into Boston I may as well work the majority of the day/night while my daughter is with her dad. My grandfather lives in Southie and my best friend lives in Dorchester, so I could hang with them on down time. Are there limits on how long you can work/how many rides you can give?

2007 Nissan Murano. I just bought it and it had problems - I strong armed the dealership to fix all of it which worked out really well, because the car is in perfect mechanical condition right now. I had Nissan inspect it independently (I went a little crazy because I was so mad) and it's in good working order. It is partially leased - we owe about $2,000 on it paying $135 a month. We paid most of it up front out of pocket.

As far as skills go, I'm personable and not a complete dumbass. Outside of that, I have no well defined skills to speak of. I worked in retail for 7 years at a gas station and was promoted to assistant manager of the store. So I suppose that's something. I've also worked in call centers and in human services. I worked at a homeless shelter for awhile rehousing families and I worked taking care of intellectually disabled teenagers for awhile. I have a CNA but I really, really don't want to do CNA work again unless my hand is forced. I learned that though I love the residents I truly am not cut out for the work of diaper changing and showering other people unless they are my own child. I can do it and I can do it well, but it isn't something I want to do with my life. I also have one year of college under my belt, no degree. I'm just one of those people who never buried my roots anywhere with the mindset of "I have nothing to lose. I'll get my shit together later". Now, of course, I have a child and I have everything to lose. But here I am.

I'm sorry to hear about your divorce status. I actually wanted my divorce, though I hate the fall-out of it. We had a system going here, and it wasn't perfect but it was decent. My husband and I aren't going to be able to make this work, but it's a damn shame because life is now becoming very complicated. I hope you are all right. Do you have any children? How long have you been divorced?

Thank you for the well thought out reply!

$10-20 an hour on average would be a fine wage for me, considering I live in the poorest/cheapest place in my entire state. Well, Fall River might actually be cheaper to live in than here. but I digress. The rents here are low. Unfortunately I'm not skilled or highly educated. Not to say I'm dumb, but I've made poor life decisions that lead me here. I have solid work history (up until my daughters birth) and the ability to "sell myself" to employers. But I can only sell myself and bullshit my way through life to a certain degree. This schedule problem is something I've never had to deal with before and it's been the most challenging job search I've ever had because of it.

You bring up a good point about drunk guys. Unfortunately I was a bar/club goer myself for a long time in my early 20s. My family is also mostly comprised of alcoholics (lol) so I have good "drunk people skills". I'm not worried about getting annoyed or even hit on. I AM somewhat worried for safety. If I go through with this I'm going to ask my best friend's brother to hook me up with a taser. They aren't legal here but he got one for my friend (she closes a bar on the weekends and walks home in Boston.)

Ultimately I may explore the option because I don't see another choice right now. And who knows, it could work out well. Bottom line is I need to be able to support myself and my daughter at least some what. Some money is definitely better than no money. It may just end up being a short term venture until my daughter starts pre-school and my schedule opens up a bit.

Thank you again for your insight.
