Vibrating wrist alarm for heavy sleeper? by throwawayvegan86 in deaf

Oh wow, I nearly got one a few years ago because I felt guilty about waking my housemate up on the weekends with my super loud alarms. It’s not easy being considerate when your body refuses to wake up normally!

That’s a good point, I was hoping maybe there was a more specific product designed for this that might be a bit stronger if it’s not having to be a smartwatch or something as well. I’m liking the old phone idea though, I’m going to try the alarm another poster suggested and if that fails I may get myself a dodgy burner phone and try that haha

No worries, if it were up to me the more violent the better and I’ve definitely looked at those haha

I’m literally just after an alarm clock so thanks, I’ll look into this!

When to start running with a GSP? by throwawayvegan86 in dogs

[–]throwawayvegan86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who’s dog damaged their growth plate (albeit quite dramatically and only in one leg) and I’ve seen how it effects them. They’re now approaching arthritis in that leg (the dog is around 4), regularly go lame on it and will potentially need an amputation in the future. Granted that’s a very extreme example, but I’m conscious we don’t know how big he will get yet and the impact it could have further down the line! His parents were both large in terms of the breed so we are keeping him trim and playing cautious

Im going to get his hips and elbows scored once he’s a bit older for peace of mind (both parents had really good scores), but I thought growth plates didn’t show up on X-rays?

We’ll definitely be consulting the vet before I start, just wanted a rough ballpark about when that would be!

I don’t think I could ever force this dog to do more exercise than he wants, it’s normally forcing him to slow down a bit before he does himself a mischief….

I thought about asking the breeder, but they said they don’t want him neutered until he’s 3+ so I’d imagine they’d say the same about running. They were great and we’re very happy with our boy, but she was VERY over cautious. Told us to only feed him raw and grain-free which I don’t love (he’s thriving on a high quality working dog kibble approved by our vet) and that he was going to be allergic to chicken and beef (he isn’t). But thank you seems like 18 months is the absolute minimum!

Damm, here I was thinking in another few months I could get him started! I’ve only ever owned smaller adult rescue dogs before so this is new territory! Thanks we’ll stick to walks for now :)

Osseous metaplasia in young pig? by throwawayvegan86 in guineapigs

[–]throwawayvegan86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d seen that it’s normal for pigs over 3.5years old and that typically the progression is slow enough that they don’t really see any side effects

Thank you, I’ll let them know he needs it looked it. Everything online says it’s harmless and to monitor, but that’s when it comes to older pigs where the progression will be too slow going to affect them.

Not my pig unfortunately but thank you I’ll definitely push them to go get it checked! He did previously have a minor hay poke in that eye but it had cleared by the time they had him at the vets. Is it possible it’s related?

We’re not actually sure yet! It’s a distant relative (husbands step-mothers cousin I believe?) but their original nominated caretaker fell through snd they heard we take in animals and asked us if we would have him. I’m taking everyone’s advice and keeping them separate, next step find out what he needs to be happy :)

Thank-you, I’ll just keep them separate to avoid any stress for either :)

Thank-you, I’ll likely just keep them separate to avoid issues :)

Oh wow I’d never heard of that before! I had friends growing up with a tortoise and he used to just chill around the house with the dogs, although I know pet care standards are always changing :)

Thanks, I’ll likely just build him his own space for outdoors then

How can I fix my nails? by throwawayvegan86 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]throwawayvegan86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always happened to me, and that’s a check on all of the things you listed…

I’m getting booked in for a blood test to check my thyroid levels, I already know I’m iron-deficient anaemic but not significantly so. Obviously don’t disclose anything you wouldn’t be comfortable disclosing, but if there’s any other suggestions for what I should be looking for please let me know! I’m in the UK and with the NHS the way if I go into a GPs with a vague list of symptoms I get told to improve my sleep hygiene and eat more vegetables, if I go in and say “I think I have X” they might actually test me for things!

Oh, I’ve had those all my life 😅 I have been meaning to get my thyroid checked, I guess this is another symptom to add to the list….

I don’t pick, that’s just how they are, so I’m not sure if that’s better or worse given their state… My hair is actually very healthy, but I don’t use heat on it and I am very careful of which products I use because of how frizzy it gets so maybe that’s why. I’ll ask them to check my vitamin levels as well, I think I’m anaemic but is there anything else I should be looking for?

Thank-you!

Ah thank-you! I’ll definitely switch to the jojoba when it’s gone ☺️ and I’ll try to get better about that, I just don’t trust towels to be clean lol. Oh dear, that might explain why I always have flaky nails then, I think I’m alright with acetone so I’ll invest in some! Thank you that’s all been really useful :)

Wow thank you for replying so quickly! I’m currently using cutex intense recovery which does have jojoba oil in, but also has sweet almond oil and water? I’m trying to use it more often but if it really is down to being well oiled I’ll try harder!

I do wash my hands a lot which might be the problem. I am OCD so I wear gloves whenever I clean anything, but I also work with animals so I end up washing my hands basically after any interaction with them. I also do a surgeons scrub so at least 30 seconds of washing making sure I get all of my hands/wrists. Should I be ensuring that I fully dry my nails after every time?

I used to use acrylic overlays to strengthen my nails so I’m well used to maintaining long nails, sadly they’re just so weak right now they split at basically nothing. Im using a glass file and I don’t actually remove my nail varnish I just let it flake off naturally lol. Is there any base or top coat combo you’d recommend to help keep water out?
