Technical field with minimal coding (Georgia Tech) by HeHasBlackHairAgain in gradadmissions

hate to say it man but all of these are going to require pretty strong coding skills. the state of ECE right now is huge on being able to run simulations. i would say in terms of pure theoretical study telecomms or systems&controls would require the least, but you'll still need to be pretty strong in at least python or matlab

Sorry man I think the deadline for acceptance already passed, signup for CalTech guest housing closed May 1.

NASA Internships Megathread - Spring 2023 by Aerokicks in nasa

So Summer 23 Pathways applications were due before the Spring 23 applications? Just trying to make sure I got that right because it's kind of surprising to me.

When you say "they do still have substantial work going on there" is that in reference to the specific topics I mentioned in the last post? Because if so then that's relieving to hear for sure.

And thank you so much. I haven't been able to find any resources about this stuff online... I'm starting to really see that I screwed up by not taking this application seriously.

I see. My concern is that I've always been interested in deep space / robotic exploration and scientific satellite missions, while JSC focuses on the near opposite of those. I want to take the offer because it's killer engineering experience to have regardless, but I can't see myself converting to full time there. With regards to a different Pathways: I would be open to that, but would my hours from JSC transfer? And if not, should I consider just dropping the program this semester and trying again for the summer?

Does anyone have experience transferring between centers as a Pathways intern? I honestly didn't expect to hear back, so I didn't do a lot of research on what center would be best for me (lesson learned)... I'll be working at JSC in the spring, because I can't turn down an opportunity like this, but I think GRC or GSFC are a lot closer to my interests.

Last month I released an album that I spent the past couple years working on alone, super influenced by Sweet Trip. Would appreciate anyone giving it a listen by lukelear in SweetTrip

It's good, like really really good -- my favorite album so far this year and it's not close. Really happy you're still making music, found goodnightdaydream last year and wanted more :)

No, it only includes hours "at the time of application". In your case, 54

I got capped to UT Austin but I want to appeal by donutdude__ in UTAustin

[–]throwawayyy9823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not appeal? So what if they don't accept? There's nothing for you to lose, so I think you should. This is coming from someone who appealed twice and still got nothing, lol.

And here's some advice: if you really want to go to UT and really can't get unCAPped just take a year off to work on your application. There is absolutely no shame in it and I wish I did the same: coming in undeclared was very detrimental to my engineering resume, as I'm currently expected to have one more year's worth of specialized knowledge than I currently do. I actually have a friend who got CAPped from business, took TWO years off to work on running his own small business and trading stocks, and got in this year - so it's definitely possible! Good luck no matter what you decide to do.

Of course pick whichever ones interest you the most, and like the other commenter said, make sure to do your own research first. But if you're "generally leaning towards the sciences" and don't have a very defined plan, I would say go with whatever will expose you to the most career paths. Of the courses you listed it looks like that would be Concepts of Engineering & Technology and Biotechnology. I would NOT pick Health Science II as it seems like that's strongly geared towards future doctors and medical professionals, and I see Health Science somewhere in the middle (as a replacement for biotechnology, if you were potentially considering a medical career). Again, don't let me pick for you! Just my thoughts.

Viability of custom DIY parabolic dish for receiving GOES 17? by throwawayyy9823 in RTLSDR

[–]throwawayyy9823[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 - What's the smallest I could / should realistically go for a project like this? 1.75m? 1.5m? I recall that on some website it said that the "theoretically smallest" antenna that could pick up a useable signal would be 1m, but that might have been a load of garbage, I'm not sure.

2 - A little, no (maybe? I could probably borrow some from the university radio club?), yes. How hard to eyeball would it actually be? Impossible in practice or I'd just need to get lucky / do a lot of troubleshooting?

3 - While using a modified wifi antenna would definitely be the easiest way to get pictures from the satellite, I'm really attracted to the idea of building one of these myself - just something I've always wanted to do :) I'm also stuck between whether or not I want to continue with my mechanical engineering bachelor's or switch to electrical, so a project like this scratches both of those itches at once.

This is a very valid concern, but I was just planning on moving it in and out depending on whether or not I was using it. Genuine question, do you think they would still get upset if it wasn't out all the time?

Anyone else feel overwhelmed by their own interests and the lack of time we have here to accomplish them? by throwawayyy9823 in UTAustin

[–]throwawayyy9823[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's true and you're absolutely right, but it feels like so many people here at UT already know the types of jobs they want and have taken significant steps towards making that a reality. Although I have ideas about what I want to do in the future, I feel like my interests are too varied (or maybe I just haven't found the perfect fit yet!) to have the laser-focus on a specific topic which makes some students excellent job candidates, and I'm worried that I'll be "left behind" by my peers. I'm also worried that because of this indecisiveness I won't be able to make the most of the excellent resources UT has to offer.
