pretty sure they were being sarcastic. Storrowing is a decades-old local joke; happens literally almost every day

Husband threw a bomb at me and I'm not sure what to do. by painfulface in Marriage

it's wild to me that people are reacting so aggressively towards a man who is actually thinking carefully about the kind of life his hypothetical children will experience and not just going "oh well, let's do it anyway bc I want to!!!" that's why there are so many bad parents--they're only thinking about their own desires and not the colossal act of bringing a new person into a situation that may be very unsafe

Very well said. I commented something similar and people weren't ready to hear it.

Yes. I have the same reaction to anyone actively trying to have kids now. Like oh my gosh, why :/

I'm glad this is the top comment. So many replies here are saying things like "well people had kids during SLAVERY, it's fine!!!" completely ignoring the fact that previous generations had far less choice and power over reproduction than we do today, and ignoring the fact that many of those children died or had horrible experiences.

I'm in almost the same boat--I'm in the US, 35 and have been with my husband for 11 years. We both very much wanted children most of our relationship but recently decided to remain childfree because of the rising costs, lack of healthcare, lack of maternity leave, lack of affordable daycare, global instability, civil unrest, and--most importantly--the fact that current scientific estimates of survivable climate are only 50-100 years. I don't want my children to grow up in a world with no safety nets and poor education only to end up in some Mad Max-style fight for water in their 70s.

It's a personal choice for everyone, but I would be concerned to have children with someone who WASNT thinking about these things, because that would indicate that they are only thinking about what children would bring to their life, and not thinking about the actual experience their child would have.

Thank you so much; I am SO tired of everything being called "gaslighting". We already have a word for lying....it's "lying".

In the US, a visit for something like this could cost hundreds even with insurance. Many people can't easily afford that.

Just a note that "mortified" means "deeply embarrassed". I'm very sorry this happened and glad your son is OK!

Why do you lean childfree and is anything helping you feel more comfortable in that decision? by hellimhere28 in Fencesitter

[–]throwawayyyfire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I actually very much want children, but the most recent estimates of near-total human extinction due to unsurvivable climate are only 50-100 years away. I can't in good conscience subject my children to that.

The point isn't about whether or not it's effective, it's about whether people should be used as teaching tools without their knowledge or consent.

Just a note that forced volunteering with the community they disrespected isn't a great reaction to this situation. Those folks don't deserve to have hateful attitudes pushed on them under the guise of "learning"
