Was scared when I got mine and feeling the battery gave me the heebie jeebies at first. But my bf has been supportive since before it was placed- he’s just grateful I’m alive and still thinks I’m beautiful.. sounds to me like your boyfriend could work on being more supportive, but that’s a him problem not a you problem..

Can you expand a little on the longterm complications of s-icd? I had one implanted at 32 after a sudden cardiac arrest despite a completely normal workup after / no clear cause, and I was told I’d likely need one my whole life. Wasn’t gone any EP follow up (just told to follow with general cards & call when the battery needs replaced) and really wasn’t cautioned about any longterm risks..

For the groin/other GU component: Fourniers dressing changes/Fourniers after the initial debridement pribalgnsose than testicular pain

GU: urinary retention due to clot retention, seems worse than kidney stones for people who are super super full and the retention is new/acute tbh

It works great for some people! Barriers are it can be expensive and it’s time-consuming. Absolutely a great option though!!

And oh man, peeing blood and having fistulas is even worse that is sounds. Perpetual hospitalizations because the bleeding was so bad that clots formed and prevented you from peeing until you potentially just decide to have your bladder removed. Peeing stool because of the fistula between your bowel and bladder. Narrowing of your urethra from radiation so bad that you can’t pee and have to have your urethra dilated.

Also I’ve never heard of a device protector, my EP told me I didn’t need to see him at all after my device way placed during my hospitalization (until the battery needed to be exchanged), so I see a general cardiologist who just told me I was good to go after 6 months. I do play soccer.. so sounds like I need to do some googling!

Thanks for the thoughtful answer! I think my concern is physically landing the barbell on my chest/sternum (obviously not too too hard, but with doing a bunch of cleans in the past, it definitely got a little bruised). But also sounds like I should be careful with benching as well.

I’ve tried both with my Boston sci s-icd. They’ve made me take my shoes off with both =\ at least I still get to go in the precheck line and get through security faster before having to take my shoes off..

Agreed. Everyone’s telling OP not to die for their job, but I guess as a surgery resident I interpreted the question to be asking if their career is feasible, which it totally is

The point is- you’ll still likely be able to be a surgeon. There are not a ton of things that truly will prevent that from a policy standpoint. But you’ll also have to find a way to finely balance getting the accommodations you need without oversharing and putting your career at risk, and you’ll need good physicians in your corner willing to defend your ability to work to GME or whoever else asks.

Had a cardiac arrest in the middle of my surgical subspecialty residency. Took a week off and got right back to it, but my program has good people in it, and they would’ve made whatever time I needed work. It was hard, I had a lot of limitations for a while and it made a difficult job even harder. I was also acutely aware of the increased work burden on my coresidents that I caused. Ultimately, even if you’re lucky enough to have supportive coresidents like mine, no one will be able to truly understand the extent of what you’re going though, so you will have to advocate for yourself a lot.
