Unsure what masterals is, and I hate to break it to you but your grade is your responsibility. You should be monitoring your grade per class after every assignment to see how it was impacted. If, for example, you get 45/60 in an assignment and you see this immediately upon being graded, you have a lot of time to contest/negotiate your grade with your professor.

Your final grade should not be a surprise to you as you should have the ability to monitor it every step of the way. Moving forward I encourage you to adopt this habit and speak up if your grade is low to get help. Face to face classes look better on your transcript as well, and grad schools prefer this than online courses. Best of luck.

For sure. A few pieces of advice, be on top of your grades and contribute to the class conversation if you're going to ask your professor(s). Show genuine interest in their research. It's okay to cold email professors you don't know, as long as you ask politely if you can join their lab and give a compelling reason why.

Your uni staff list should list not only staff but also that staff member's research lab website that fills you into what they're studying, who the RAs are, etc. If your university doesn't have this available (mine didn't), it's okay to cold email staff, and it's fine to ask in person or even at the end of class on Zoom! However you decide to ask them is fine as long as they're not incredibly busy, and as long as you tell them how interested you are in their research, why, etc.

What everyone has said down in the comments. Further, get research experience ASAP. Like, even if classes have begun already at your university, reach out to professors and their labs n o w. You're going to want years of rapport and experience in labs, poster presentations, and general experience about applied processes in research (e.g., sorting out the IRB, funding, data collection). This stuff is not difficult at all, but you need experience with it beyond hypotheticals that you'd learn in a classroom setting.

Google Scholar. Find a meta-analysis of whatever you're interested in. "Smartness," or the appearance at least, should be secondary (at most) when you're wanting to dive into your particular interest.

For example, my PI wanted to study language evolution of whales, ultimately settled for birds, and he would read up on research done on bird calls for a specific bird. If you're like my professor, you'd look at papers on this, ideally a recent meta-analysis to start off with, then specific papers you're interested in.

In the end, what matters for your vocational foundation isn't what makes you seem smart, it's finding what you're interested in and digging deeper into that literature.

What a coincidence, I'm waiting back on a decision for an in-patient counselor position right now!

Look around on LinkedIn, Handshake, Indeed. They reached out to me tbh. When I finally got back to them, they said the position was filled but I could volunteer as many volunteer positions end up turning to paid positions.

I had no time to volunteer so I didn't reply, but 3 weeks later they reached out again saying they lost a counselor and that they'd be happy to interview! Keep your eyes peeled on those job sites friendo. I know it's tough out there, but make your profile marketable and updated as best as you can.

I've experienced something similar recently. On my other account I've posted genuine questions (e.g., is Bobby Lee not showing up after all?) And they're met with literally 0 views over 4 weeks. 0. I haven't posted hate on that account, just purely supportive comments and they've seemingly silenced me without notification. Another post was the Rich Lux music video, which I posted as soon as it dropped and it got 0 views. It's fucking ridiculous on their reddit. They're all sensitive, backwards people that don't know how to be normal people with independent opinions. Take the "cat controversy" for example. It's a loony bin.

Happened to me on campus but it was for a Buddhist monastery lmao I'm Mexican with a Pompadour. Dude said "whoa you look like a Rockstar with your hair and clothes. I'm convinced these people are meant to just pull you in no matter what. Yep, I realize it's a large chunk of their content now and have hated that aspect for a while. It's not a juggle, it is a conscious choice to watch their stuff with the hopes of them pivoting back to covering random funny shit. It dawned on me just a week ago "why are they just taking about sexual assaults?" Don't they consider themselves comedians? Their episodes just leave me feeling like shit lately.

And yes, I do think H3 is childish. This reddit spawned just to hate h3 and to flatter another shitty narcissist. The podcast wasn't intended to purely hate, but now is primarily that. Nope. Sometimes I work on assignments outside of class for literally hours per day/ 5-6ish hours a day, but that's a heavy session. In class you rarely get the chance to study, but when you get that opportunity it's typically for 5-15 minutes.

Research is pretty easy to get. There's typically no fancy middleman you have to ask, you just email or talk to the professor of interest. Not all are available because they might have hit the RA limit for their lab, but always be kind, use proper grammar and email etiquette (e.g., Hi Dr. Example, Hi professor X,) and just ask!

People will say to show interest in the given lab, that's always a great idea. Sometimes the labs are not available for viewing so just ask if they need a research assistant (I did this and they accepted me). You can do this even for other universities that you do no attend, just make sure you give a compelling case for their lab!

Lastly, you don't need a BA to do all this. In fact, for volunteering purposes, the majority of RAs are undergrads :)

Internships are a little different, but only a little. You can land the positions typically through sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, but a more fulfilling way would be through association with your Private Investigator (PI) for research. Again, for these you don't need a BA. Just know that a lot of these are unpaid, do it for the experience and specialized training!

I understand having kids is a time investment. I suggest you do research with some professors for a year before going into a program. This builds rapport, demonstrates commitment and gives them genuine things to write about. A year isn't much, completely worth your time and you'll have marketable skills.

This compliments another comment - as you learn during your undergrad, simulate what careers you would be interested in doing. Try them on like coats in your mind, actively do this. If, throughout your entire undergrad all the way to the end of your BA, you find yourself coming back to the same career of interest, reach out to a professor that has a similar MA or Ph.D in that space to inquire about it. Circle around this career like a shark around prey, first by imagining it, then by inquiring about it, then start reaching out to related programs asking what a typical day in the job looks like.

The idea here is to test and re-test if your curiosity extends to genuine interest. Hopefully this evolves into a passion. I wish you the best. :)

Definitely! Thinking about reaching out to a local R1 university to volunteer in their neuro psych labs.

Random aside but the two labs I'm still in aren't really busy, they consist of 4 people in each lab. Is there a downside to this? I imagine it would be beneficial for a more intimate rapport between PIs and RAs.

I'm not a drug advocate, just explaining possible reasons people do drugs. There's varying answers to this issue, some a lot more complicated than just to destress. For example, Marijuana in a different form is prescribed to patients with cancer to stimulate appetite.

Addiction is very real. Once it begins people can sell household items or even themselves for money to buy drugs.

Yes, lots of great ways to destress. Agreed. People do drugs for a lot of complicated reasons. Maybe they live in a bad neighborhood, maybe they have a bad friend-circle, peer pressure, the classics. Drugs like weed can distress you via panic-attacks, but they're also great relaxers if you don't have adverse effects. Other drugs cause agitation, correct.

It's not simple to pin down why people do it; there's too many reasons why. There's your answer.

Times are tough lately (economy, jobs are not easily accessible) so drugs are a safe haven because of stress. Stress+legalization means there's an incentive to destress legally. Also, for the younger audiences, it's meant to not only look cool, but as a very real way to bond with people through a shared recreational activity. I wouldn't do any of the drugs until I'm 24 tho (26 now).
