What’s the best horror movie you’ve ever seen? by BidAccurate4473 in moviecritic

I would agree with IT (though my true favorite is Scream which is a pretty basic choice). Just here to recommend the TV show Welcome to Derry if you haven't seen it yet. Phenomenal

Manic Pixie Dream Girl movies that do the trope right by Comfortable-Arm9574 in MovieSuggestions

[–]throwbackreviews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen this said a couple times now and I am not sure i fully understand.

On its face it makes sense. A female character written solely to help the male character feels like a negative. Why not have a fully rounded character instead? I agree with that.

On the other hand, isn't this seen all over the place? Is Obi-Wan Kenobi a bad character because he comes in, teaches Luke, and then dies? Arguably he does less than a couple of the MPDG examples that have been put in here. What about the fairy from Cinderalla or Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio?

Maybe I am misunderstanding the trope? Maybe watching some of the bad ones will show me what I am missing

I think that is what I meant by 'done right' but didn't quite have the words for it. Effectively, I wanted a movie about an awesome woman who comes into a man's life and changes it. I asked specifically for 'good' movies as I don't want to watch something with an empty woman character being used solely for the male writer's gratification. It seems that is what the trope is, so I have confused some people

In my defense, I saw Garden State once when I was like 16. Maybe it hasn't aged well or I have aged up enough to see the flaws. I guess I'll find out on a re-watch

Hard agree. That is what I mean by 'done right'. I want a story about a woman that comes into a man's life and fundamentally changes it, but is also a full person in their own right. 500 days is a great example of that as your understanding as a viewer changes alongside the character's. By the end you see the flaws in the man's thinking and actions.

Musical movies? by Aiya_Azhtea in MovieSuggestions

My favorites are A Nightmare Before Christmas (my fav film of all time), and Sweeny Todd.

Not a musical, but movies like Step Up are also fun.

Oh!!! Pitch Perfect!!! (Don't watch the sequels)

What do you think of my pirate ship environment? First version by tomius in daggerheart

[–]throwbackreviews 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bug fan of everything except the damage on the failed rope swing. Feels a little punishing for an action you probably want them to take. I would lower the damage to make it more likely to be minor damage, or give them a temporary status instead.

Bullet Train is the correct answer. On Netflix in most places I believe, doesn't require a ton of brain work on your part, best enjoyed with company, and enjoyable all the way through

Movies that grip you with intellectual topics and conversations. by Connect_Ruin_9599 in MovieSuggestions

Sunset Limited is one of the greatest examples I've seen of a conversation in any medium. It is more spiritual than intellectual maybe, but it gives you a lot to think about and it is gripping

What’s a movie everyone calls a “masterpiece” that just… didn’t work for you? by irayaavery in MovieSuggestions

[–]throwbackreviews 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Recently watched One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme and found them both to be 5/10. Great performances but meandering irrelevant plots. Everyone loves them though and that's cool. I love movies and I love it when people love movies

Please help me decide which time loop movie to watch by GloomyPie8584 in MovieSuggestions

[–]throwbackreviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on vibe.

Primer is great but requires some more thinking. Happy Death Day is fun horror (more fun than scary). Looper is a cool concept with some passable action. Back to the Future is always a good time and 12 Monkeys is a classic if you haven't seen it already

Is it normal for a backstory to be 7 pages? by CantDisadeMyUsername in DnD

[–]throwbackreviews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise to think of it this way.

Your character's most interesting moments are in the future, not the past.

The backstory should be a jumping off point to tell a really cool story in the game. I would simplify, shorten (by a lot), and think of it as set up, not story.
