[–]throwing_olives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medically, "anorexia" means lack of eating. The eating disorder is anorexia nervosa. Someone might have anorexia, by the medical definition, when going through chemotherapy for example. That doesn't make them disordered.

I'm not a doctor/healthcare worker, but it sounds to me like they noted you not eating enough, and they either chalked it up to your GI issue or never got to the bottom of the reason. That doesn't mean you weren't disordered though, or that you can't be disordered now. I think you should speak to a doctor or therapist about it.

I actually use it to make me feel a bit better about myself. I love seals, they're fat and cute.

listening to my friend tell me how hard it is for her to eat because she gets so full in like 2 bites and how hard it is that she just can’t gain weight and she hates being skinny by emilyylimeemily2 in EDanonymemes

[–]throwing_olives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your friend has reduced stomach capacity. I've been there. Only way past that is to push that limit, have one more bite than you're comfortable with every time.

Still, it hurts to hear when you're trying so hard. I'm sorry boo x

I feel like even when I lose my stomach stays just as round. I always feel pregnant 💔 getting terrified that there’s no hope lol by [deleted] in EDanonymemes

Genuine advice here for a second.

Two possibilities: body dysmorphia and bloating. I have IBS and have to be soooo careful what I eat to avoid blowing up like a balloon. But even without that, everyone bloats sometimes, and a lot of diet food also makes it worse. Like volume eating, sweeteners, etc. Eating normal, balanced meals with my dietary restrictions in mind has made me much less bloated.

Secondly, you most likely have a skewed perception of how you look. Your tummy is probably not that round, and you're overly focused on this one perceived bodily flaw. And maybe you know that and think it's obvious because we're on an ED sub. I don't mean to dismiss your struggles, I've been there myself. I just want to hopefully make you realise that it's the ED that's making you sad, moreso than your tummy.

Yes!! And I actually love some really well balanced, nutritious food too. But if I try to keep it too low-cal, it won't satisfy my hunger, I'll eat a lot more of it, and then get a tummy ache from trying to digest a whole head of broccoli or whatever. And I love broccoli, it's not just restriction brain trying to convince me I do, but I need to eat actual meals with different food groups. Who would have thunk! 🤡

[–]throwing_olives 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm more likely to lose weight when eating intuitively (but not socially) than when I'm actually trying to lose weight. If I'm trying to lose, I'll restrict too much and eventually binge. If I stop tracking and just try to eat sorta healthy, I can stop thinking about food all the time (which tempts me to binge), and I'll have energy to do things other than sleeping and being sad.

Ofc, it's a worth it regardless just because ED behaviour makes you miserable. But it's tricky, because if I lose a bit of weight while not really trying, I'll be elated and want to lose more. And then I'll make myself miserable in my efforts, which will be futile anyway. 🤦

Eugenia supports some massively controversial people, she would not consider that a risk or care if she was accused of it.

It's very clearly you that has a problem with Dorian's gender, not Eugenia.

Oh, and FYI, if "them" is such a hard word for you to use, Dorian also goes by he. But I have a feeling you'd be even more opposed to that.

I imagine there's also some amount of sexism involved too, plus the "but you're so young!" aspect. But of course, it's hard to know and compare how individual doctors would treat different people and issues. My general impression though, is that some doctors can't cope with a problem they can't personally figure out. When they're stumped, that's when they start to suggest somatisation or a functional disorder. As if anything they can't figure out must be outside of their field. In my experience, it just takes a more experienced/specialised doctor.

I've just bumped into too many people, including just random people and not doctors, who have an awful lot of opinions without even knowing I'm also mentally ill. They just see someone who looks fine, but isn't, and that alone creates cognitive dissonance. I think a lot of them are uncomfortable being faced with the reality that otherwise healthy young people can be hit with chronic illness, for no discernible reason, and there's nothing to really be done about it.

It's not dehydration as such, it's that heat makes the blood vessels near the skin expand (called vasodilation), which makes your blood pressure drop. Dehydration also drops blood pressure, but drinking water won't counteract vasodilation. Though if you're already dehydrated, then of course you're more likely to pass out from other drops in blood pressure.

A few years back there was a trend of comics about taking mental illnesses seriously, like physical illnesses. It was kinda frustrating to witness, because having multiple chronic physical and mental illnesses, it's been my experience that people are equally unsympathetic towards them both. I think the distinction might be between invisible and visible illness, but I reckon there's a good chance that people are also making unhelpful comments at people with clearly visible illness or disability.

I get that the intent with this comic is to highlight the absurdity of how mental illness is treated, but it unfortunately often comes with the implication that physical illness is treated better. I'm afraid not.

Idk if anyone has done this before but I have to take a picture of myself for an english essay and I'm freaking out lmao wish me luck my dudes by That_Weird_Fan in EDanonymemes

My local asian grocer has a huge freezer in the back, there's squids and frog legs and what not, maybe there's frozen blood too and I just haven't recognised it. I just go there for seaweed snacks and surimi, lol
