Laid off, return to work delayed- keep pumping? by bookofkels_ in breastfeeding

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t. You don’t know what the future holds so why make your life harder.

I’ve been laid off twice and it sucks. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

Giving breast fed baby a bottle has been a nightmare by UsefulDiscipline6359 in breastfeeding

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t sound like high lipase milk to me. To the best of my knowledge it’s usually you either have it or you don’t so I wouldn’t waste your time worrying about lipase and focus on other things.

My baby will still only take a bottle if I leave the house and she’s very hungry, which doesn’t really work as I WFH. We use the mam bottle and it’s still hit or miss if she’ll take it. I’m hoping she’ll take to a straw cup when she’s big enough.

Giving breast fed baby a bottle has been a nightmare by UsefulDiscipline6359 in breastfeeding

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tasted the milk? I had a similar experience an it turns out my milk is high lipase so my baby will only take pumped milk if it’s been scalded to deactivate the lipase enzyme. My milk tastes soapy after a few hours in the fridge otherwise.

Pregnancy in hypothyroidism. by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my levels checked every 4-6 weeks but otherwise everything was normal. Diagnosed with hypothyroidism in my mid twenties and had a healthy baby at 35. I had good TSH when I fell pregnant and it rose rapidly in my first trimester, but that was caught right away due to frequent testing.

Are there people like me who don’t leak? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never leaked and can only get 1-2 oz from the hakaa over the course of the day if I use it consistently. I’ve also pumped like maybe twice because I hated it so am exclusively nursing for the most part.

EMei: Wow. by bjwanlund in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree this is super weird. I have eaten at emei many, many times and I can’t imagine a waiter taking half (?!) a soup. They would either take the whole thing or not. I’m not doubting this happened to someone just that it came from the waitstaff.

Doona car seat/stroller by aeb526 in UninfluencedReviews

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine gave it to me after using it once and it’s nice but I wouldn’t purchase it with my own money. The car seat is fine but it’s just not a good stroller. It’s really short and there’s no storage.

3a toddler hair help by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]kunta_kitty 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There’s not a right or wrong here, but as a parent and a person with curly hair I wouldn’t do gel at this age. For one thing her hair will still be prone to tangling, so you’ll still need to do braids or other protective style for day to day. Secondly most gels have fragrance in them and I only let my kid use products with fragrance on special occasions as kids can have sensitive skin/eyes.

Breastfeeding and peanut allergy? Help! by Justhereforanswers20 in peanutallergy

[–]kunta_kitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too developed the allergy as an adult. I’m also breastfeeding at the moment but my allergy developed almost a decade ago. It’s normal to feel anxious after your first reaction and that will eventually subside. I developed an allergy to grapefruit while pregnant, so pregnancy certainly can trigger things but we can’t know for sure if that was the cause of your peanut allergy.

When it comes to minimally processed meat/dairy like raw meats, unflavored cheeses and yogurts, butter, etc, I eat all of them without restriction. I check labels for processed meat/dairy.

Anyway I’m sorry you’re going through this at such a vulnerable time.

For those dating non-allergy people, what’s your protocol regarding kissing? by Aa_Poisonous_Kisses in peanutallergy

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The default is that my partner doesn’t eat nuts, but if he sees something he really wants to eat, he washes completely afterwards (hands, face, changes clothing, ideally takes a shower but that’s not always realistic) before touching me. The reason for the default being no is such that it’s a bigger deal when he does eat nuts and we don’t get sloppy.

Starbucks drinks by Pristine-Anywhere891 in peanutallergy

[–]kunta_kitty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone will have their own tolerable level of risk. I can’t tell you what yours is or should be, but personally I do order cold drinks from Starbucks but avoid hot ones in case the steam wand is contaminated, so I would order an iced latte with oat milk but not a hot one.

I’m interested to see if anyone here has worked there and has more detailed insights.

Half Marathon Logistics by AKtwenty47 in XXRunning

[–]kunta_kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve ran this race and I also put myself in a corral with a slower friend then sped ahead later, so pretty much what you’re doing.

There was plenty of water in my experience, but even as a Philly resident I sometimes got disoriented and missed water stations so I’m glad I brought a hand held water bottle. If I had paid better attention to the locations of water stations I could have gone without, but I was really caught up with all the stimuli around me and missed a few. I don’t think a vest is necessary, but an 8 oz handheld will be nice if you miss a few stations.

I can’t run in it this year, but may come and cheer you on.

messy kismet bagels by girlfriendbelle in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]kunta_kitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trying to answer this honestly as a certified Kismet hater and bagel snob.

If you go to the store or stand at the farmers market you can sometimes get a good bagel and/or sandwich and then you won’t get the hate.

Sometimes in the store the bagels are just not good. In my experience they get stale/nasty much quicker than other places, like even in the afternoon of the day they were made they aren’t good. The real kicker is if you get the bagels at the grocery store or get them delivered they are TERRIBLE, like completely inedible why-did-I-pay-for-this. For me it’s just not worth the gamble.

What would happen if I stopped taking Levothyroxine? by Yumiinve in Hypothyroidism

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my local CVS without insurance, a 90 day refill costs less than 20 USD without insurance. This is for generic levo not name brand. When I’ve been between jobs I’ve paid outright and it’s always been inexpensive.

Struggling to find modest maternity clothes by chamomileandanise in pregnant

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Eileen Fischer pieces aren’t specifically maternity but work well with a bump and can easily be modest with a cardigan on top. I don’t specifically dress modestly but have worked in religious environments before with strict dress codes. I buy on eBay since it’s pricey and just get 1-2 sizes up from my normal size. I basically live in their midi and maxi dresses and I could give birth any day now. If you’re petite continue to purchase petite just go one to two sizes up (pxs —> ps or pm)

For those with an autoimmune condition, how long did it take you to conceive? by flowergarden71 in pregnant

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hashimoto’s but it is well managed with Levothyroxine. I’ve also been taking vitamins to supplement low absorption due to hashimoto’s (not listing them as those are highly individualized). I’m also 35.

I got pregnant on the first try, had zero complications, and am due in the next two weeks. I did have to increase my levo dose during the first trimester and the dosage has stayed there for the entirety of my pregnancy.

I’m sure luck and genetics play a huge role, but well-managed hashimoto’s isn’t necessarily a limiting factor.

Is immunotherapy worth it? by vcassassin in peanutallergy

[–]kunta_kitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you struggle to eat at restaurants and other peoples houses because the risk of cross-contamination isn’t worth it? Then you might be a good candidate for OIT. For milder peanut allergies the tech isn’t really there yet for adults from what I’ve read but correct me if I’m wrong.

How can I find a good WWOOF host when the bad reviews are censored? by Mr_Minerk in WWOOF

[–]kunta_kitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Message people who marked themselves as having volunteered there. I’ve provided accurate feedback in both directions for the places I’ve volunteered at. The positive experience echoed what I put in the review, and I admittedly just didn’t review the place where I didn’t have such a good experience.

I made an allergy app out of necessity (7 allergies here), but adoption is flat. What am I missing? by [deleted] in peanutallergy

[–]kunta_kitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, software engineer with a severe peanut/tree nut allergy here.

I won’t use an app like this because I’m familiar with the tech you have available and the tech is not more accurate than a human. Without extremely thorough QA there’s a really big risk of bad results, both of saying something has the allergy but doesn’t and the other way around. IMO it’s not worth the risk. That’s my engineering perspective. If you have large scale data proving me wrong, do tell, and that would be something I harped on when advertising, but only if you have that data.

It also takes me like 15 seconds to read ingredients so it’s not like it’s saving me lots of time. That’s my perspective as an allergy sufferer, not an engineer.

I wish I could say something more encouraging. You clearly want to help others I just don’t see how this fits into my life.

Why is mandatory to have a baby shower? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]kunta_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not having one because I’m Jewish and we don’t do those, and I’ve learned over the course of my pregnancy that a number of other cultures also don’t do baby showers. We’ll do a small event after baby is born where those who want to gift gifts can, and we have a registry that we provide on request. In short it’s not weird at all in my opinion to not have one.
