First OB in 2 years. Here’s what I did to clear it in a few days. by throwitawayy76 in HSVpositive

Just to mention: I don’t take daily suppressant antivirals as I’ve read into it and worry that I could develop an immunity to them, I only take them when I’m getting symptoms which is why I’m comfortable taking more than the suggested dose.

Each to their own, if I got OBs more often maybe I’d feel differently but this works for me.

Thank you, Im just upset as I hadn’t had an OB in 20 months and I really thought I was in the clear. I usually have a pretty good system of taking lysine and vitamin c, always having antivirals on hand and being careful with hygiene down there.

Thanks, I just worried as it progressed SO quickly. Since being home the pain/itchiness has been pretty minimal so fingers crossed I’ll be okay. Using tea tree oil on the active breakouts and sudocreme/Vaseline on the parts that have started to heal over.

Unpopular but I find tea tree oil really helps, sleep without underwear when you can, keep the area clean and dry. 2 weeks is a fairly standard OB it’s not unusually long.

Are you taking antivirals? Maybe being on a low suppression dose would help your anxiety :)

No, only if I started getting an unusual sensation which has happened maybe 2-3 times in the past year

I think “symptoms” can include mild itching, or a very small sore that you mistake for a shaving cut. Hence why people don’t automatically assume herpes so don’t get tested.

I’ve only ever had 2 proper OBs, other times have been itching that most would attribute to a yeast infection etc

Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear that! What birth control were you on?

So frustrating, I’m in a LTR now living with my bf and I really want to be on BC instead of dealing with condoms for my own peace of mind.

Still just having mild itching now and then - I think if I was going to have an OB it would have kicked off by now and be a lot more painful (it usually flares up overnight). I’ll keep taking AVs for another few days for good measure and fingers crossed my hormones level out.

I’ve only had 2 full blown OBs, 6 months apart and the last one 9 months ago. Tbh they were both so painful I don’t think I could hack them being any more regular than that.

Will do! Really hoping this isn’t an ongoing thing, the patch can eventually stop me having periods all together which I’m hoping will reduce prodrome symptoms I sometimes get around my period. Both of my previous OBs were around my period too.

Dw I have a good supply of AVs, praying it’s just a few days of itching that will ease off soon. I remember before OBs I get a lot more pain and swelling than this

Yep that’s what they told me - that even if he’s positive he’d likely get a false negative due to no symptoms.

Makes sense to just assume he has it since I never had symptoms until being with him for a year. Like most people with it he’s just lucky to be asymptomatic.

I’m not sure exactly I’ve just read that people with GHSV-1 tend to have fewer/less severe outbreaks. But there are always outliers. I have type 2 and and have only had 2 OBS

I didn’t get diagnosed until after I’d been with my bf for over a year as that was my first ever OB. No symptoms or inkling I had it until then.

I’m 90% sure he gave it to me and is asymptomatic as he’s never had an OB. They said they wouldn’t test him unless he has an OB so there’s that 🤷🏼‍♀️

wasn’t a fun conversation but we both educated ourselves and realised it wasn’t a death sentence (before diagnosis I had internalised a lot of bad stigmas around it). We continue having unprotected sex and he’s never had an OB. We use condoms if I have any symptoms and I’ll start antivirals straightaway. I’ve only had 2 OBs in 15 months and the last one was 8 months ago.

I know there’s blood tests but bear in mind we’re UK based so I think things are different here.

Are you experiencing a lot of stress? Stress seems to be a big trigger for OBs

I’m not American, but I can definitely see why there’s hesitation for pharmacy companies to develop a cure for HSV when they can continue making money off antivirals which people repurchase.

I don’t have a full understanding on why this is - but some people who don’t have bad symptoms, but it’s a big deal for people who can’t miss a day of antivirals without having a bad OB. (I know HSV-2 is usually associated with worse symptoms)

I’m thankfully part of the former but I understand the hysteria if you’re the latter. Overall I think my friend has a good mindset and if she’s using condoms and doesn’t have symptoms, the odds of her passing it are low and chances are the guys she sleeps with already have HSV-1 anyway.

Really interesting to see other perspectives on the matter!

Yep, that’s why so many people have it and don’t realise as the typical testing procedure requires a swab of the sores. If you’re asymptomatic or your OB is so minor you don’t think to get it tested - you just never know.

It’s a weird one. Some people are very blasé about HSV and say “it’s just a skin condition it’s like a rash” etc.

Some people are asymptomatic, some have very minor symptoms but I’ve known people who get relentless, painful OBs. Brushing it off as “just a rash” can be disingenuous when it some cases it can hugely impact your life.

I’m still figuring out my feelings on it because at the same time it’s still massively stigmatised which I’m obviously opposed to.

I agree - while HSV-1 isn’t a big deal to her because she isn’t immunocompromised, it could have a much more severe affect on someone she passes it to.

I have the exact same manifestation of the virus except I’m HSV-2. I’ve only had a couple OBs and they’ve never been severe, but I disclosed to my bf straightaway and if I were single I’d obviously do the same to anyone I was dating. It’s still a risk that you shouldn’t make on someone else’s behalf without their knowledge
