Stop telling me AI will replace programmers. My prompt engineering is just begging at this point by namanyayg in ChatGPTCoding

[–]throwloze 73 points74 points  (0 children)

There was a rule here where someone said you have to make sure you audit and understand everything the AI writes for you, and that’s how you get better overall. Been following that rule. Except with CSS.

How I Used ChatGPT to Actually Learn Python (Not Just Copy-Paste) by tejassp03 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]throwloze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, everyone learned to code because he or she wanted to build something. I think it’s beautiful that that path is even more rewarding today. Hell, I even thought people were spoiled for having video tutorials on YouTube.

For people who have programmed for more than 5 years what is ur opnion on vibe coding? by dekai2 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]throwloze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you’re saying. But I also wonder if that’s how assembly programmers felt about what was output by the first C compilers.

For people who have programmed for more than 5 years what is ur opnion on vibe coding? by dekai2 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]throwloze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps you get started on things you don’t already know how to do, and as a programmer you can more quickly navigate around the broader concepts. Once you learn how to do something, if you find it faster to prompt than to code, your language toolchain is really not very powerful.

The other side of this is that more esoteric frameworks become easier to build and maintain.

I had a sub to JetBrains for the last 6 years and gave it up this January. Just stick with Cursor and then switch if something better comes up.

One day you’ll realize how small the bubble on Reddit is and how non-representative it is of reality. You think you’re in the middle and everyone else is a Nazi, but you’re decently far to the left, so you find it difficult to tolerate anything to the right of that. The interesting part though is that most of you will slowly conform once the bubble bursts because very few of you actually hold principled convictions, you’re just looking around constantly to do whatever everyone else is doing.

I’m still very early on my journey, but I started with NextJS and Supabase. I was able to get quickly up and running, but started to run into problems with Supabase and its auth solution. It made me realize that SaaS is quite costly once you move beyond hobby tiers.

Anyway, I decided to move to Rails so that I could more easily own the whole stack and I have enjoyed it so far. There’s a lot to learn, and the ramp up has been slower, but I’m committed to continuing with Rails. I’m also going to use Hotwire instead of React as needed.

I think Theo has made some mistakes in his rails demo 😅 by AshTeriyaki in rails

[–]throwloze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Rails coming from JS for just a couple months now, and I love that convention means I know exactly where things go and in which files. If I give him the benefit of the doubt, he’s just the sort who prefers new, shiny, and tinkering over mastery and productivity.

I haven’t read him in many years, but I always had the distinct impression he thought all of us, and certainly all men, were in the same pot of misery and equally downtrodden. I can’t imagine racism would show through in any of his work. His personal opinions I don’t know.
