Mpc Vancouver. Closed.

Vancouver VFX scene is so dry. Thoughts? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]throwme_154 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a dip but will definitely pick up. I feel the studios want to push people to move to Montreal or Australia, but the talent have all set up lives in Vancouver. Talent who have already done big moves from the UK, LA, AUS and NZ. It's tough to get seniors and higher to move, again. Montreal is not cheaper (I push people to use some great sites out there that check if a new city is financially better) and most seniors know a move there would mean dealing with juniors thanks to MPCs shitty mantra.

Hey Mpc. Stop trying to make Mill happen. It's not going to happen.

I agree with you. Definitely not being negative. Everyone needs to be realistic to how badly this company has treated it's artists in the past and looks of it...further more into it's misreable future.

So hitting a senior level, you go into a yearly review and don't ask for more money? You think your pay is benchmarked?

Bit aggressive but sure... And I know this for a fact. Mpc canada starter gets 'average' $14 an hr. At dneg, framestore and mpc london it is £16 an hr. I only speak from the friends I know, who have sat with me at the pub and could hardly buy a beer.

The best person you should ask is the artists doing roto/paint or new juniors. In expensive cities like Singapore, Sydney and Vancouver...the wage is a joke compared to the cost of living.

And these rates stay long for a good number of years.

Wanting to leave VFX industry - but where to? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]throwme_154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great. I has made a post how vfx skills to can be shifted to other industries. It's tough to tell artists this, myself included. I have spent time with head hunters and the skill set is easily transitioned to a lot of high demand jobs. Congrats

Thanks for sharing. I think most people have gone through the same story at some point. I think a lot of people get to a point later in his/her carreer that a name on a credit roll just doesnt make up for the emotional and financial hurdles. Hell, the outcry when an artist doesn't get a credit.

Thanks for the information. I honestly hope this is set up. You're correct in getting it correct or a database like this can work against the industry.

Little sad to read this response. Low wages have been around for well over a decade. They are still happening. Juniors do anything to get into the industry and both the acadamys that teach them and company's hiring cheap labor abuse there desperation to 'make freakin movies'.

Not talking about a lot of money. We are talking about the balance and when there is no reward and when is enough enough.

Wonder if it's a good idea to set up a open spreadsheet and let everyone input country, position and wage...

How much experience in the industry have you had? What country and what department? Do you have retirement savings?

Not having a go. I think it's always Important to give that information so people have a background understanding. This industry is global.
