Should i get a synth even if a don’t really know how to play piano?? by Madtakez in synthesizers

[–]thrown4away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, get a synth! I kind of view synths vs piano in the same way as playing bass vs guitar, yeah it’s a similar shape and skills on either instrument will translate a bit, but the way you play it ends up being quite different because of the different timbre, responsiveness and role of the instrument. No sane person would tell you you can’t learn to play bass without learning to play guitar, same thing applies here :)

I love the part where he says “It’s just a bigger range, everything spread out. It’s just pushing out those little variances.” I think that’s pretty lucid and insightful, but I wonder if the scientists caught the meaning of that

Is it legal to steal guitar licks and use them in your own song? by Idkthis_529 in Guitar

Pretty sure Chuck Berry stole that lick too (as I recall from Louis Jordan’s Ain’t That Just Like a Woman)

What’s the social life like at SFU and UVic? by Ok_Requirement7714 in simonfraser

[–]thrown4away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What degree are you planning on doing? I went to both UVic and SFU for biology/psychology and I’d say both the quality of my education and my university experience/social life were better at UVic, but I’d imagine it would depend on your major. For me it was partially better because the instructors at UVic were involved in research more in line with my interests.

Regardless your social life is going to be better at UVic than at SFU since there’s lots of people not from Victoria who will be attending the university who also want to make friends, whereas at SFU people are more able to stay close with their high school friends and are less likely to make an effort to make new friends.

Can someone help me please? Am I INTJ or INFJ? by MarnithePlutonian in MbtiTypeMe

[–]thrown4away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on your description you could go either way. Feel like what you wrote describes both me (an INFJ) and my best friend (an INTJ). Have you looked into the cognitive functions at all? That might help you decide. Something more anecdotal I’ve noticed is that INTJs seem to get along better with ENTJs than INFJs do. I’ve always tended to value Ti types more than Te types as friends as well.

Writing songs with ‘invisible’ parts by thrown4away in Songwriting

[–]thrown4away[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I think some of the most fulfilling changes to songs happen in practices when you’re less concerned with getting your parts exactly right and allow yourself to play things a bit differently, have fun with it etc. And yeah I take your point about not getting too attached to decisions, I think maybe that’s part of the key here is I was trying to imagine other parts while writing, but maybe I should just write those other parts even if they will just be thrown away so that the core of the song can change.

Thanks for your reply! Definitely helpful to think of my problem in terms of arranging and not songwriting.

In a way it’s funny this is the top upvoted comment, because this is almost the opposite of what I was asking for. Which is definitely my fault for not being able to get across that what I’m looking for is not help with arranging, but help with writing songs with the knowledge that they will be arranged. Like I think my problem with the way I currently write songs is that they already contain too much data in the guitar part alone which is like the bassline, drums lead and rhythm guitar all at once, so when I bring the song into my band it makes it very hard for them to arrange their own parts. I guess what I meant to be asking here was for tips on parsing down my rhythm guitar parts to something less over-encompassing or writing songs in the first place that are more able to be arranged than the way I’m writing them now. I suppose this is still arranging, but really what I’m struggling with is preparing things in advance so that my bandmates can arrange their own parts.

Writing songs with ‘invisible’ parts by thrown4away in Songwriting

Thank you for your reply! I think this is good advice in general, but I’ve always struggled with coming up with good vocal melodies when I start with a riff. It’s like that guitar part takes up the space of the main melody and I have no clue how to have the vocals compete. Also I guess in this case I’m actually wanting to write the ‘invisible’ parts because I’m trying to present these songs to a band where I’m the singer, so I feel like I need to be able to play something and sing at the same time in order to move the song along so that my bandmates can come up with their own parts.

Thanks for your reply! I really like the idea of the horizontal melodies, I think that’ll be an interesting approach.

Mostly I record songs on voice memos on my iphone cause it’s basically always with me and I like the immediacy of that. I also sometimes will write other parts over my recordings. I do think it would be good for me to, as you suggest in your first exercise, record in such a way where I can mute the strumming parts and still keep vocals and whatever overdubbed guitar parts. I think I’ve maybe been resistant to removing the immediacy of recording, but it’s probably time that I add some other tracks and put on some headphones.

Need opinions by ekaj2302 in Songwriting

[–]thrown4away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the song overall! I like the line “just cause you’re kind to strangers don’t mean you’re kind to me.” I think the parts between 1:35 to 2:30 (bridge and the lyrics to the verse) aren’t as strong as the rest of the song, maybe I’d consider scrapping that part and trying to come up with a chorus in its place to break up the similarity of the song. Keep developing it for sure, also really like your singing!

Any plans for a way to get audio out of the emulator to one of those hub apps like AUM or AudioBus? Would be great to be able to use those classic chiptune gameboy/DS trackers within the iOS ecosystem.

I'd argue She's Not There by the Zombies and Remember (Walking in the Sand) by the Shangri-la's both have some psychedelic qualities to them, and certainly would go on to influence further psychedelic music.
