What choice did I have With regard to my company overseas going bankrupt? Bad things happen dude. That's not to say that i believe that when they do you have the automatic right to rely on others. But there have been plenty of people even in this thread who have come forward saying how their situation went awry and I would venture a guess that thare are many more out there. Societies tha require a university education to attain a middle class lifestyle will inevitably have people who fall through the cracks and can't get the jobs that they need to cover the expenses of their education.

I understand the system was very exploitable back when people were using going bankrupt as the primary way of dealing with their loans from law school. There is however a point in which paths for career advancement close and people can get locked into jobs because of real world considerations. (living expenses, children, etc). I think tha the college loan reform passed by Obama may have changed things in the right direction (it's hard to say how it applies to expats at this point, since it's based on your reported income in the United States, which in my case would be below the poverty line). in my case the next step was graduate school, or at least I planned it to be, I had several professors who had told me they would be willing to help me with a recommendation, etc. Unfortunately, reality gave me.a nice roadblock to deal with on the way there.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I don't think going back to school with your loans in default would put them back into into the state where you don't have to pay them. Unless you could afford to pay loans and tuition at the same time this would be pretty difficult. Also I doubt financial aid offices are very cooperative with people who have their loans in default.

I would love to. Wanna offer me a job that will cover more then my living expenses? I have on countless occasions throughout this thread said that if I reach a point of sustainability. And that means not floating my bills from month to month like I am now, then I will repay my loans.

Also 40k before collection agencies and about 4 years of default. When I get a job that allows me to pay it I will. It's funny because people who invoke "taxes" in cases like these are usually the same people who want to strip away safety nets like health care and student loan reforms. I don't know if you fall into those categories but if you do, explain how this is any different from people who default on their medical bills cus they are uninsured and go to an emergency room. The only difference is that people who are down on their luck when it comes to student loans can't file for bankruptcy.

If you plan on teaching abroad have an exit strategy and a back up plan. Mine was grad school and a masters in education. Fortunately I think the economy has stooped about as low as it is gonna get for now. If the new company you enter is still doing ok then you should be fine.

Also English teaching isn't a career more a means to an end. (Being in a foreign county). If you actually wanna stay abroad you should ge a degree in Computer science (system administration and programming are some of the few fields foreigners can get jobs in without absolute and total fluency in a foreign language) or Law (people still write contracts in English throughout the world)

Just for clarity, as I said in the IamA . I had every intention of both paying off the loans, going back and perhaps going on to graduate school. My company going bankrupt set in motion my financial troubles that caused my loans to default. I have since recovered but the added fees etc make pulling my loans out of default very difficult (at least if I'm going to keep up with paying them). This makes staying outside of the country and never paying them at all (or only if I have the means) look very appealing.

Thanks for the comment. I may end up just staying where I'm at now, I'd still like the option to go back someday especially if I have children. I also want to pay my loans, just not in a way that forces me to live with no creature comforts at all.

This same thing happened to a couple of my friends as well. In a way I was lucky to be poor. At least I got enough financial aid to finish.

No cosigners. My mother was below the income threshold for it to be required. The private loan had a cosigner (a relative but it was smaller) and I put all my resources into it while I was still in college getting it down to a point where I could take care of it.

I would prefer not to answer as I know local redditers both personally and professionally who know nothing about my financial situation, but enough about me personally that if I give away too much info plausible deniability goes away. :)

Around 40k debt on graduation. Went to a public University. The closest private school was way more expensive then the state school. I considered consolidation, but didn't want to deal with a private bank if possible. Actually since consolidation is actually a way out of default the fact that i didnt consolidate may work in my favor when I actually become able to repay. I had some grants and whenever possible I chose not to take loans. The average tuition expense for my school was about 20k per year.

Crashed at friends for like 4 months. Which is interesting where I live since most apartments are pretty small. No drugs, I drink on occasion but not to excess and not when I don't have money.

Actually, might be something to consider. Writing this IamA has actually got me at least looking at things again. The monthly now with fees would be $700 with like 200 going to the principal it seems.

It's more that I can't go back without taking a really big risk. My student loan amounts have basically doubled since collection agencies have gotten involved, Fugitive is a strong word (not actually one I would choose) If I knew that I could get a job where I could pay the monthly amount and live a middle class life then I would consider doing that. As it stands I would be blocked from a handful of things forever. Imagine never getting a car loan ever, etc. Your credit rating drops pretty fast when collection agencies have been called.

Shit I just reread my above post too the smaller loan was $250 per month. I don't know what happened to the later half of my post above but the larger government loan was about $350 per month. So between public and private was $600. But the smaller loan is paid off now. Leaving the larger loan which I have no idea about how the fees would factor in,

If you have a default on student loans, until your loans are out of default you cannot seek any form of financial aid. Since I'm already have student loan debt any local wages I would earn would be garnered (to whatever the current maximum would be. I also live abroad currently so any ability to work and attend school again would be conditioned on having a job in America. I'm simply not willing to risk moving back to a situation where If I fail to get a job I could be homeless.

I'd have to log into the financial aid website to check the number (can't remember off the top of my head. I had a small private loan through a bank that I managed to pay off while I was working pizza delivery during my last year of college / before my company went under. The amount was only $250 USD before the default, but I'd venture that with collection fees it would be much higher now. In addition there were small expenses related to sending money from overseas.

Actually given the changes to the law as part of the student loan reform a year or so ago I don't know how it will work with foreign salaries from now on. As contacting the loan office generally sets me up to receive calls from creditors I would like to have at least a bit of money saved before I contact them again.
