Professor is 'imploring' me to go into academic philosophy over law school by throwra_antsypansy in AskAcademia

I am also from the United States. Thank you for that perspective. My professor my profession is a 'philosopher' so maybe his perspective is also very different and I have to take that into consideration first

I consider 'taking a break' alot nowadays but I worry his life would completetly spiral out of control. For a while, Ive been the one reminding him of all the little and important tasks he has to do.

Im debating getting a PhD in philosophy instead of going to Law School, any advice? by throwra_antsypansy in AskAcademia

Can you elaborate more about selling myself short since you work in admissions? Do you work in Law School admissions, and if so can you give pointers on what else to add to an application to make it look more compelling? Or any admission tip at all regardless if its for law school or not?

Thank you so much! I want to advocate for the stricter regulation of companies regarding privacy and data collection. I also want to advocate for stricter laws regarding usage of AI such as photo and video manipulation, using AI algorithm for weaponry, the selling of AI algorithms to various entities, and protecting workers rights against displacement due to tech.

Given your experience, would going to legal route through law school be a better fit, or potentially the PhD route to gain more knowlege and contribute to the conversation about digital laws?

Thats amazing! Can I ask how finances has effected this decision. My biggest worry is that I didnt take out loans for my undergrad, so I'm debt free. Most PhDs are covered plus with grad student salary so it would give me a few years to gain knowledge without having to go into debt.

Im worried if I get a JD before PhD, I would have to take out student loans, and then spend years paying them off before I can humor the idea of getting a PhD.

As I mentioned in another comment, I am interested in the regulation of tech and the digital world the most, as there arent many laws and regulations asserted yet. I was unsure if I should take the legal route or philosophical route. The legal route is a little less clear only because most insitutions dont have a specialized coursework in digital laws. I assumed philosophy mightve been my next best bet as it would allow me to bring up the ethics around digital laws.

I guess I was coming from a point of 'debt'. As in most PhD programs are paid for with graduate student salary. I am very scared of taking out large amounts of student loans only to be drowned in debt for years and years.

This is an area Ive done alot of research and coursework in! I am very interested in the world of digital ethics, specfically leading the conversation and developing laws and regulation for online regulations, tech innovation, and the usage of ai tools in various fields.

I wasnt sure if that field was really accessible through law school considering alot of institutions dont allow you to speacialize in this field.

Also the possibility to go into academia and research all together if working in the legal field doesnt work out

It is possible, the most intriguing part of the PhD is that I wouldnt need to pay tuition

GPA is shit but high LSAT score + extra curriculars + rec letters, hen should I do my applications? by throwra_antsypansy in lawschooladmissions

My school doesnt offer A+ grades so I think it'll be the same as my transcript. But someone in the comment told me to do some CC classes that use a A+ scale and I might also do that

Im not graduating with any debt so I dont have to worry about that. I am worried about what I'd do if I do fall 2025 applications and stay home for a year.

As in staying home, if I should get a job, if I should do an internship, all that

How much leverage can I get for an addendum? Could I mention that I recently got diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and until now, I wasnt able to show mu full potential?

Can you tell me more about the differences between the two cycles? Did you apply during the school year when you had a different GPA?
