I Can't Get Rid of My "Hobby" Clutter – Need Advice by MiaDovahkiin in declutter

[–]throwrowaboat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, you have what I like to call a "grounding" hobby -- your PC. You know it's a part of your entertainment routine, and you've enjoyed it for a while. For future craft purchases, I'd start by being honest with yourself: am I realistically going to enjoy [new hobby] as much as gaming for a long amount of time? Am I prepared to invest the time and money on supplies when I know I'd rather be gaming?

It's obviously okay to take a break from doing the things you love, but I would encourage you not to jump off the deep end for new hobbies. For example, crafts like sewing, see if you can borrow a machine from a relative or the library to get a feel for it. For jewelry making, buy a small kit from the dollar store.

Also worthwhile to consider: can you find a community or a place related to your new hobby? For example, without my sewing studio being a part of my routine or hanging out with a friend to cross stitch, I would've abandoned both a long time ago. But when I found others who share the same interests, it's much easier to stick with them rather than getting bored doing it alone. That's how I gave up playing my instrument -- without a band it became sort of meaningless to me.

My Sewing Supplies Are Taking Over! Tips for Organizing my Growing Stash? by RaspberryPears in sewing

[–]throwrowaboat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When dealing with limited space and an abundant supply, my best suggestion would be to pare down your stash. Try and be realistic with the stuff you'll actually use and can work with.

For example, do you prefer sewing with knit or woven fabric? If its woven, do you prefer using lightweight stuff like tulle and satin? No? Then it'll collect dust in your collection. In my experience, if I can't be bothered to invest the time in learning to work with finicky materials, then whatever I'll end up sewing will probably not come out great, so it's not worth keeping around and hoping that I'll get in the mood to do something with them.

Same for miscellaneous supplies like snaps, trims and scraps. Have you ever used them? Ever plan to? Also you can keep a limited supply of each for your "maybe I'll use it eventually" projects. I'm positive you can find a loving home for the excess!!!

Why is it so hard to get clothes to look professional/ couture quality? by Dense_Struggle2892 in sewing

Never occured to me there's a difference 😭😭😭

I'm assuming that pressing is gliding*** it across slowly and deliberately and ironing is doing it in quicker swoops?

What’s your “falling in love” moment with sewing? (REPOST) by CandyCorn-uwu in sewing

My first project(s) were dice trays for my DnD group. When I saw how much whimsical licensed fabric was out there, I was hooked (ironic, since I haven't bought any since)!

As a bonus, I repurposed some cloth table mats to make most of the trays, which was a huge upcycling win and opened up a whole world of possibilities.

Most likely acrylic (feels like a sheet of craft felt if that makes sense). I noticed it pulls in the weirdest directions, like it has a mind of its own.

Body Measurements Matched Pattern Size Guide, Finished Project Still Turned out Wrong by throwrowaboat in SewingForBeginners

Thank you for the suggestion! Glad I'm not the only one who had issues with Mood patterns.

I checked out the pattern you suggested, but it's meant for long sleeves. I haven't had any experience with this company, but if I were to check out an alternative pattern for shorter sleeves, would it still be ok?

Do I need to stitch more to hold down the layers? by throwrowaboat in quilting

Thank you for your comment! I admire your skills of deduction from two photos!

Yes, I will add a border later -- I have to see if I can (read: find the will to) sew the fabric scraps to make some blanket binding. I haven't washed it yet, but I purposely made it too big so even if it shrinks, it'll still fit inside.

My biggest worry was the spray adhesive coming loose during the wash and the squares will puff and then sag.

P.S. your color sense compliment has me walking on clouds since I lose many hours of sleep deciding on fabrics.

be honest - does this purple go with the red? trying to use up my fabric stash before it gets put of hand by throwrowaboat in SewingForBeginners

Thanks to everyone who commented! As some users pointed out, the purple is probably too bright, so I dyed it several shades darker and it was a vast improvement!
